Never Judge a ‘Mon By Its Cover
Some Pokémon look like they should be easy opponents, yet they can become absolute nightmares in battle. The series has always been full of creatures that don't necessarily look intimidating but have excellent stats, useful abilities, strong moves, or unusual strategies that make them much more dangerous than you'd expect. You might even have underestimated some of these Pokémon simply because their designs seem cute, ordinary, or downright strange.
1. Ditto
Ditto doesn’t strike much of a threatening appearance, but Transform allows it to play unique roles in battle. Equipped with the right held item, Ditto can come in, copy an opponent’s appearance, moveset, ability, and stats. It can be particularly powerful when facing teams with dominant setup sweepers.
2. Shuckle
Shuckle resembles something between an insect and a small turtle, but is deceptively defensive. It holds some of the highest defensive stats in the series, able to shrug off attacks that would KO most Pokémon in one hit. While not meant to go offensive, Shuckle can abuse its resources and attacks like Sticky Web and entry hazards to become a serious nuisance.
3. Azumarill
Azumarill has a cute appearance and a joyful smile, but don’t let it fool you. Huge Power effectively doubles its Attack stat, giving this Water- and Fairy-type Pokémon considerably more offensive strength than its base stats suggest. Once it gets access to powerful physical moves, Azumarill can hit surprisingly hard while still having enough bulk to take some punishment.
4. Shedinja
On paper, Shedinja should be one of the best Pokémon in existence thanks to its ability, Wonder Guard, basically letting it ignore any move that doesn’t deal super effective damage. That sounds incredibly powerful, but Shedinja has only 1 HP, so hazards, status conditions, weather, and certain abilities can eliminate it without giving it much of a chance.
5. Smeargle
Smeargle appears to just be a simple painter, but thanks to its ability to learn almost every move, it can fulfill an insanely high variety of roles. Sketch allows Smeargle to learn moves that most Pokémon can’t learn normally, opening up the option to create teams around fulfilling certain niche roles.
6. Clefable
Clefable has always had an adorable design, but years ago it was seen mostly as a supporter Fairy-lookalike. Clefable has since become more respected due to its various abilities and movesets. Magic Guard ignores damage from many indirect sources, allowing Clefable to adopt certain strategies with less penalty.
7. Breloom
Breloom may seem like a friendly mushroom Pokémon, but breeds surprisingly strong options. It can reliably put opponents to sleep with Spore, and Technician allows Breloom to buff certain weaker attacks. When used with Breloom’s already respectable Attack stat, Breloom can escalate into a serious problem very quickly.
8. Quagsire
Quagsire has one of those faces where it looks absolutely clueless. That lack of awareness is literally its strength thanks to Unaware; Quagsire ignores any of your Pokémon’s stat changes when dealing or taking damage. Essentially letting it ignore common setup moves, Quagsire can become a menace to any Pokémon that tried to boost their stats.
9. Ferrothorn
Ferrothorn isn’t exactly revered for its appearance, but it has established itself as a strong defensive Pokémon thanks to its capabilities in battle. The combination of typing, powerful defensive stats, and access to entry hazards allows it to frustrate and wear down opposing teams. It also has Iron Barbs, which damage any physical attackers that make contact.
10. Toxapex
Toxapex looks like you definitely do not want to touch it, and it doesn’t get much friendlier during battle. Toxic Defense makes it tankish, is resistant to several types, and has access to recovery and status moves. This combination can make Toxapex difficult to deal with, as players will often find that just pounding away at it doesn’t work.
11. Whimsicott
Whimsicott is cute enough where you’d expect it to do nothing more than set up status conditions on opponents. However, its ability, Prankster, gives priority to any status moves it uses. As such, Whimsicott can support your team and mess around with enemies before they even get a chance to move.
12. Gliscor
Gliscor looks strange, but Exclyore isn’t known for putting Pokémon with pretty designs on the tier leaderboards. Poison Heal allows Gliscor to recover HP at the end of each turn if it is poisoned. Essentially allowing Gliscor to turn poison, which is normally a huge liability, into an asset.
13. Chansey
Chansey is about as cute as Pokémon designs can get before looking out of place in a battle between powerful creatures. With the right item and moveset, Chansey can absorb repeated hits while supporting its team with recovery and status options. Its physical Defense is a major weakness, but special attackers often find themselves facing an opponent that refuses to go away.
14. Skarmory
Skarmory intimidates far less than many Pokémon on this list, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on its defensive potential. Its excellent physical Defense and Steel typing give it numerous opportunities to switch into attacks and disrupt opponents. It can also set hazards and remove them in certain generations, making it useful far beyond simply taking physical hits.
15. Mimikyu
Beneath Mimikyu’s adorable cosplay lie some hidden battle advantages. Disguise allows it to absorb the first damaging attack it takes without suffering normal damage, giving it a valuable opportunity to attack, set up, or use a utility move. That single free turn can make an enormous difference, especially when Mimikyu is carrying powerful offensive moves.
16. Dondozo
Dondozo is a big fish with more of a goofy expression than a scary one, but it’s surprisingly bulky. With much higher than average HP and Defense stats, Dondozo can take a lot of physical damage that you might expect such a frail Pokémon to dodge like Skarmory.
17. Klefki
Despite its silly appearance, Klefki has both Fairy and Steel typing. This allows it decent resistances to several types, and Klefki has Prankster. With access to moves that can set up hazards, spread status, and support your team, Klefki has the tools it needs to create openings and strike.
18. Porygon2
Many forget about Porygon2 due to its evolution, Porygon-Z, stealing the spotlight. Holding an Eviolite, which increases the Defense and Special Defense of Pokémon that can evolve further, can make Porygon2 bulkier than you’d guess.
19. Ribombee
Ribombee doesn’t look threatening at all; it’s tiny, brightly colored, and you want to cuddle it. Its impressive Speed allows it to move before many opponents, while abilities and moves that support its team can make it useful beyond straightforward damage dealing. It can also set up valuable field effects, making its presence important even when it isn't directly knocking opponents out.
20. Wobbuffet
Wobbuffet appears perpetually confused, but once you understand its battle strategy, you’ll realize just how oppressive it can be. Shadow Tag prevents opponents from switching out in formats that allow it, trapping them into battle. Counter and Mirror Coat then allow Wobbuffet to retaliate based on the damage it receives, turning an opponent's own attack into a potential problem.
