The Marvel universe is filled to the brim with iconic characters, like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Iron Man. Unfortunately, the popularity of these characters forces others to the sidelines. Hidden underneath the fame of Thor and Captain America are heroes and villains that are just as rich and begging to be explored.
Arguably, the most underrated Marvel character of all time is Beta Ray Bill. His strength, honor, and depth rival that of far more legendary characters. He plays a major role in Marvel lore, but is still only appreciated by die-hard Marvel readers and fans.
Let's get to know Beta Ray Bill and why you should dig deep into his stories and adventures, and write a few letters to Marvel about why he should have his own movie.
A Worthy Warrior
Created by Walt Simonson in the 1980s, Beta Ray Bill was first introduced as a member of an alien race, the Korbinites, who were on the brink of extinction. Beta Ray Bill was engineered to be a guardian of his people, eventually turning into a lone warrior battling every threat that came his way.
He clashed with Thor in a decisive showdown, but eventually proved his worth by lifting Thor's enchanted hammer, the Mjolnir. Thor was humbled by Beta Ray Bill's honor, and the rivalry shifted into mutual respect. Their alliance would turn them into one of Marvel's most significant duos.
Loyalty, Loss, and Power
Beta Ray Bill's backstory blends cosmic elements with personal themes. His strength rivals that of Thor, but he is defined by his nobility and willingness to sacrifice. Odin even forged a new hammer for him, the Stormbreaker, which is equal in power to the Mjolnir.
There is a heartbreak in Beta Ray Bill's devotion to his duties. He is the protector of the last remnants of his people and is personally responsible for their survival. Not to mention, his transformation into a cyborg-like champion comes at the cost of his former life and original form. He loses much of his personal identity.
Marvel Should Seize the Cinematic Opportunity
Beta Ray Bill remains one of Marvel's biggest missed opportunities in their cinematic universe. He has all the elements to become a fan favorite, including a tragic backstory, stunning design, and an emotional depth that makes him relatable. Sadly, his only appearance in the MCU was as an easter egg in Thor: Ragnarok.
A standalone film or Disney+ series could have the ingredients for an under-the-radar hit. It can introduce audiences to his origins, sacrifice, and his place in Thor's world. Elevating Beta Ray Bill to the mainstream is probably not a top priority for Marvel, but it might be one of their most overlooked decisions.
Most people don't know who Beta Ray Bill is, and that's unfortunate. He embodies everything that makes the Marvel universe so enriching and engaging. His adventures offer rich storytelling, emotional stakes, and a heroism that anyone can root for. For now, though, he is forced to remain as the comic giant's best hidden gem.
