You Don't Need to Know the Lore to Know the Face
Some fictional characters are instantly recognizable. If you were shown a picture of Pikachu or Mario, you'd probably immediately know who they were, even if you didn't know their names—though you'd have to be living under a rock to not know Pikachu or Mario. Whether it's their distinctive outfits, personalities, or silhouettes (Sonic, for example, is a literal blue hedgehog), good branding has popularized certain figures far beyond their original fandoms, and you don't need to have picked up one of their games or read a single issue of their comics to put a label to the face. If you're up for the challenge, see if you can name these 20 characters just by the pictures alone.
1. Mario
Even people who couldn't name five Nintendo games usually know Mario on sight (as well as his brother Luigi, of course). His red cap, blue overalls, mustache, and cheerful face have remained remarkably consistent since he became the star of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Decades of games, merchandise, television appearances, and movies have made him one of gaming's most universally recognizable characters.
2. Batman
You don't need to know Gotham City's history to recognize Batman's pointed cowl and bat-shaped emblem. Since debuting in Detective Comics in 1939, Bruce Wayne has appeared in comics, games, animated series, blockbuster movies, toys, and countless pieces of merchandise. Even people unfamiliar with his villains or backstory generally know exactly who they're looking at.
3. Pikachu
Pikachu became the face of Pokémon so completely that it's often recognizable to people who couldn't explain what a Pokémon actually is. The yellow body, red cheeks, pointed ears, and lightning-bolt-shaped tail make the character difficult to confuse with anything else. Between the games, trading cards, anime, movies, and merchandise, Pikachu has reached far beyond dedicated Pokémon fans.
4. Spider-Man
Spider-Man's red-and-blue suit and large white eye lenses are familiar almost anywhere comic book imagery appears. The character has been a Marvel fixture since 1962, but movies, cartoons, games, and merchandise have introduced him to generations who may never have touched a comic. You don't have to know Peter Parker's personal history to recognize that costume instantly.
5. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic was designed to stand out, and decades later, his appearance still does exactly that. His bright blue coloring, oversized shoes, spiky silhouette, and confident expression became closely associated with Sega during the 1990s. Even someone who's never finished a Sonic level can usually identify the character without hesitation.
6. Superman
Superman's costume helped establish much of the visual language people now associate with superheroes. The blue suit, red cape, and large "S" shield have remained recognizable through decades of redesigns and adaptations. His fame stretches so far beyond comics that plenty of people know his basic identity without having read a Superman story.
7. Pac-Man
Pac-Man doesn't need a detailed costume or realistic face to be recognizable. His simple yellow circular design became one of the defining images of early arcade gaming after Pac-Man arrived in 1980. The character's basic shape is still used on clothing, collectibles, advertisements, and decorations by people who may rarely play video games at all.
8. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman has remained one of the most visible female superheroes since her comic debut in 1941. Her tiara, bracelets, red-and-blue costume, and golden lasso have helped maintain a recognizable look even as individual designs have changed over the years. Movies, cartoons, games, and decades of merchandise have made her familiar well outside DC's regular readership.
9. Link
Plenty of people recognize Link even if they mistakenly call him Zelda. His pointed ears, green clothing in many of his most famous appearances, sword, and shield have made him one of Nintendo's defining heroes. The Legend of Zelda series has changed his appearance repeatedly, but the basic visual identity remains easy to recognize.
10. The Joker
The Joker's appearance is distinctive enough that even people unfamiliar with Batman comics usually understand who the character is supposed to be. Green hair, pale skin, brightly colored clothing, and an exaggerated grin have remained recurring features across numerous interpretations. Different movies, games, and comics have altered his personality and design, but his basic identity is rarely difficult to spot.
11. Lara Croft
Lara Croft became one of gaming's first characters to achieve major celebrity outside the medium itself. Her look has evolved considerably since the original Tomb Raider launched in 1996, yet her association with exploration, twin pistols in earlier portrayals, and adventure gear remains widely familiar. Movies and extensive marketing helped introduce her to audiences who had never owned a PlayStation.

12. Wolverine
Wolverine's mask alone is enough to make him stand out among Marvel's enormous roster of superheroes. Add the retractable claws, yellow-and-blue costumes from many comic appearances, and famously aggressive demeanor, and there's little chance of mistaking him for another X-Man. Years of movies, cartoons, comics, and games have made him recognizable even to casual superhero viewers.
13. Master Chief
Master Chief became closely associated with Xbox after the original Halo launched alongside Microsoft's first console in 2001. His bulky green armor and reflective gold visor give him a distinctive appearance even when his face remains hidden. Someone may know very little about the Covenant, Cortana, or the wider Halo universe and still recognize the character immediately.

14. Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn is unusual among major comic characters because she began in animation before becoming a major presence in comics, games, and movies. Her classic red-and-black jester outfit remains famous, while later versions introduced the colorful hairstyles and punk-influenced clothing now associated with her. Those changing designs haven't stopped her from becoming one of DC's most identifiable characters.
15. Kratos
Kratos has a visual identity built around details that remain noticeable even as the God of War series has changed dramatically. His pale skin, red tattoo, muscular build, and stern appearance carried over from the Greek-era games into his later adventures in Norse mythology. The addition of his beard arguably made him even more recognizable to modern gaming audiences.
16. Deadpool
Deadpool's full-face red-and-black mask makes him immediately identifiable despite covering virtually all of his facial features. His twin swords, matching costume, and intentionally irreverent personality helped turn a once more niche Marvel character into a mainstream favorite. 17. Princess Peach
Princess Peach has been appearing alongside Mario for decades, and her bright pink dress has become nearly as recognizable as his overalls. Even someone unfamiliar with the Mushroom Kingdom can probably identify her as the princess associated with Mario.
18. The Hulk
The Hulk has one major advantage when it comes to recognizability: there simply aren't many other famous superheroes who look like him. His enormous build, green skin, and torn clothing have remained defining traits through comics, television, movies, and games. People who don't know Bruce Banner's story can still identify the Hulk from those features alone.
19. Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong's brown fur, red tie, and powerful build have made him one of Nintendo's most recognizable characters. He first appeared as Mario's opponent in the original Donkey Kong arcade game before becoming the star of his own platforming series. Even people who have never played a Donkey Kong Country game can usually identify the character immediately.
20. Ghost from Call of Duty
Ghost became recognizable far beyond regular Call of Duty players thanks largely to one exceptionally distinctive feature: his skull-patterned face covering. Different versions of the character have altered the mask and tactical gear, but the skull imagery has remained central to his identity. His prominence in newer Modern Warfare games and online gaming culture has made him familiar even to people who couldn't explain much about the series' story.
