End Of An Era: Sony Is Slowly Looking To End PS4 Support

The PlayStation 4 is an all-time defining console. Launched in 2013, it became one of the best-selling machines of its generation, with over 117 million units shipped globally, and has a sizeable cultural impact on the industry. It provided players with unforgettable exclusive experiences, introduced the world to 4K-enhanced games, and developed a large online community that changed how we play console games for almost a decade. The PS4 was for many players the home of new friendships and a platform where communities were built, but also where some of the best modern franchises have evolved. But even for the most remarkable consoles in gaming history, there eventually comes an end. It seems that Sony is now preparing to close the PS4's chapter.

Sony Begins Winding Down PS4 Services

Sony plans to phase out core PS4 services by spring 2026, new documentation cited by Insider Gaming has revealed. This will not be limited to just a specific game but rather all PS4 games that are submitted for release after the said date. The following features are included: Activity Feed web, title small storage, title user storage, word filters, users and profiles, shared media.

This action speaks volumes: Sony is slowly retiring the PS4 as part of a larger effort to move remaining laggards onto current-gen hardware. Nearly a decade after the two systems went side-by-side, the PS5 is finally free to take the lead unchallenged.

PS Plus Is Also Leaving the PS4 Behind

The changes won’t just be limited to system services. PlayStation Plus, Sony’s own subscription service, is now officially preparing to start dropping PS4 content beginning in January 2026. PS4 titles have been a mainstay in PS Plus’ monthly games and Classics Catalog, but that’s about to change.

Sony has now announced that it will no longer be giving PS4 titles as a first-class citizen as part of the PS Plus experience. This will include the third-party PS4 titles already offered on PS Plus as well, which will eventually be removed from the PS Plus catalog entirely. Sony has not provided a hard deadline for when PS4 content will be removed entirely, but PS4 content will be pared down until all that’s left is a legacy-only library of games with no new content added.

For PlayStation Plus subscribers who have not upgraded to the newer console, that translates to fewer new games, fewer benefits, and shrinking long-term value. For Sony, it's another intentional nudge toward a unified PlayStation ecosystem on PS5, the console that the company obviously views as its primary platform for the future.

A Look Back at the Legendary Console

Sony's PlayStation 4 has had its share of highs and lows over the last eight years. From industry-shaping exclusives like God of War, Bloodborne, and The Last of Us Part II, to a sizable international community and a game library that defined a gaming generation, the PS4 has had many things to celebrate. It also had its fair share of struggles, including early-launch hardware shortages and a tough period in cross-gen development once the PlayStation 5 was introduced.

As Sony begins to remove PS4 from its services, PS Plus support, and eligibility for new features, the beginning of the end is in sight for the PS4. While there's a bittersweet taste to the proceedings, there's no denying that the PS4 has more than etched its place in history. The PS4 defined a generation, gave us some of the best gaming experiences of all time, and irrevocably altered modern gaming, an era fitting for one of the best-selling consoles of all time.
