Some Favorites Need a Time-Out
The Harry Potter fandom has no shortage of beloved characters, and honestly, a lot of them earned their place in our hearts. But with the franchise being as old as it is, with fans as devoted as they are, it’s time we addressed the Zouwu in the room: some characters get treated like flawless icons when there are actually plenty of reasons to pump the brakes. Though this might ruffle some feathers, we’re here to break down which characters have had their fair share of the spotlight, and which haven’t had nearly enough.
1. Albus Dumbledore
Dumbledore gets praised as the twinkly-eyed mastermind, but let’s be honest here, guys: the man left a lot of teenagers to clean up his messes. He kept major truths from Harry, sent students into dangerous situations, and let Hogwarts remain wildly unsafe year after year. You can respect his brilliance, but you should also admit the fandom treats his secrecy like charm instead of a serious character flaw.
2. Severus Snape
We’re not saying that Snape isn’t one of the most memorable arcs in the series. We are, however, saying that the nonstop romanticizing gets exhausting. His love for Lily doesn’t erase the way he bullied Neville, humiliated Hermione, and spent years taking his bitterness out on children. The “Always” moment also isn’t a magical eraser for everything he did before it.
3. Draco Malfoy
Alright, we’re not above admitting that we had an inexplicable crush on Draco growing up, but that ended pretty quickly. Never forget that he’s a cowardly creep who wasn’t secretly some misunderstood hero. He mocked Muggle-borns, backed blood-purity nonsense, and only started looking tragic once the consequences finally reached his own doorstep.
4. Sirius Black
Don’t come for us! Sirius is a fan favorite for good reason, but people conveniently tend to gloss over how reckless he could be. Look at it objectively for a second: he constantly encouraged dangerous risks and treated Harry like a stand-in for James at times. His love was real, but that doesn’t make every impulsive decision noble.

5. Luna Lovegood
Honestly, we’re a little sick of hearing about Luna. She’s like the fandom’s Phoebe Buffay, and at some point, enough is enough. Yes, she’s sweet and refreshingly odd, but the fandom also turns her into a perfect truth-teller instead of a character who also just believes stuff with no evidence. You don’t have to pretend every Crumple-Horned Snorkack reference is hidden genius.

6. Bellatrix Lestrange
Bellatrix is undeniably entertaining, and while we can respect a good bad guy, the obsession with her is a little too much. It’s worse when you remember that her main personality traits are cruelty, Voldemort worship, and theatrical violence. Let’s also not forget that she tortured Neville’s parents and killed Sirius, so maybe we don’t need to keep acting like she’s the ultimate cool villain.
7. Neville Longbottom
Speaking of Neville, we all know that he has one of the most satisfying glow-ups, and his stand against Voldemort is genuinely great. At the same time, the fandom overcorrects by acting like he was the true secret lead all along. He wasn’t! His courage is impressive because it grows slowly, not because we’re rebranding every scene as proof that he carried the story.

8. Remus Lupin
Remus is often framed as the calm, mature Marauder, which is fair when you stack him against his old friends. Then you remember he tried to walk out on Tonks and their unborn child because he was drowning in guilt and fear. Don’t get us wrong, he’s a compelling character, but fans can be too quick to file him under “perfect sad professor” and move on.
9. Fred and George Weasley
Sorry, but we said what we said. Fred and George are amazing, yes. They’re funny, clever, and responsible for some of the best comic relief in the series. However, their pranks aren’t always harmless, and they’re not even the most interesting characters. The fandom treats every chaotic thing they do like comedy gold by default, and it gets a little old.
10. Voldemort
Voldemort is obviously going to be remembered as an iconic villain, but he’s not exactly as layered as fans make him sound. His backstory is chilling, yet by the later books, he mostly becomes a snake-faced power addict who keeps underestimating love, loyalty, and basic teenage persistence.
On the other hand, fans love debating the obvious icons, but some of the best characters barely get the attention they deserve. We’re here to show love to some of the hidden icons that aren’t discussed nearly enough.
1. Minerva McGonagall
Wait, what? McGonagall is always talked about, isn’t she? Not to us, she isn’t! Despite it all, she still doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the most dependable adults at Hogwarts. She isn’t just funny when she spars with Umbridge. She isn’t just cool when she tells Peeves how to unscrew a chandelier. She’s the adult who consistently notices when something is wrong and keeps showing up when Hogwarts is falling apart.
2. Arthur Weasley
We always talk about Molly, but what about Arthur? He could’ve been written as a goofy dad who likes plugs and rubber ducks, but there’s a lot more going on with him. He works in a thankless Ministry job, raises a large family with genuine warmth, and risks himself by helping the Order of the Phoenix when it would’ve been easier to stay quiet. He’s the ultimate heartwarming dad.
3. Fleur Delacour
Fleur gets dismissed a lot, especially by anyone who’s only ever seen the movies. But for real fans, she proves exactly why that judgment is unfair. She competes in the Triwizard Tournament, always manages to keep her nerve, and refuses to abandon Bill after he’s attacked by Fenrir Greyback. That hospital wing scene alone should’ve squashed the idea that she’s only there to be beautiful.

4. Kingsley Shacklebolt
Kingsley always feels like the adult in the room, which is rare in this series! Let’s go over his CV, shall we? He protects the Muggle Prime Minister, helps mislead the Ministry about Sirius, and fights at the Department of Mysteries without turning every moment into a grand speech. There’s also a calm authority to him that makes you understand why he eventually becomes Minister for Magic.
5. Ginny Weasley
Justice for Ginny! The movies did her dirty, and we’ll never get over it. Any true fan knows that she’s one of the most underrated characters, not just Harry’s awkward would-be wife. She joins Dumbledore’s Army! She fights at the Department of Mysteries and stands up to people without flinching! The real Ginny is funny, capable, and confident—and she deserves better.

6. Dean Thomas
Dean quietly has one of the rougher journeys in the later books, and it’s easy to overlook because he isn’t always centered with the others. But we see you, Dean. He goes on the run during the Muggle-born persecution, gets captured by Snatchers, and still returns to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. That kind of courage doesn’t come with a huge monologue, but it still belongs in the conversation.
7. Madam Pomfrey
Why are the medics always left on the wayside? Hogwarts would’ve fallen apart much earlier without Madam Pomfrey patching everyone back together. She handles everything from cursed injuries and petrified students, not to mention whatever insanity the Defense Against the Dark Arts class causes. Her no-nonsense bedside manner is funny, but it also shows how much responsibility she carries while everyone else gets the glory.
8. Regulus Black
Regulus doesn’t appear much on the page, but that doesn’t mean we forgot about him. His story adds a serious punch once you understand what he did. After he realizes Voldemort’s cruelty firsthand, he steals the real locket Horcrux and dies trying to weaken the Dark Lord from the inside. It’s a small piece of the larger war, but it’s one of the bravest turns in the entire series.
9. Cho Chang
It’s so annoying that Cho catches this much heat for acting like a “grieving teenager.” Sorry, her boyfriend died! It doesn’t take much reading to remember that she joins Dumbledore’s Army and gets caught in a messy situation after Marietta betrays the group. Fans can be tough on her, but her arc makes her feel more human, not less worthy of sympathy.
10. Aberforth Dumbledore
Aberforth could’ve been just the grumpy brother in the background, but not to us. We know that he brings a grounded perspective that the story needs. One of the best things about him is that he’s one of the only people to call out Albus for the damage done to their family. He also joins the final fight when Hogwarts needs him. Sure, his bitterness doesn’t cancel out his bravery, but that mix makes him far more interesting than he gets credit for.
