First And Foremost
Before we even start telling you about his game, we should probably tell you a little bit about Hideo Kojima, right?
This video game legend was born in Tokyo on August 24, 1963 (Virgo Sun, Libra Moon in case any of you were wondering), and joined video game company Konami in 1986. During his time at Konami, Kojima directed, designed, and wrote the 1987 Metal Gear Game, solidifying his mark on the video game community. He founded Kojima Productions within Konami in 2005, before re-establishing it as an independent studio in 2015.
Alongside the Metal Gear series, Kojima also played a large role in the creation of the Death Stranding series, as well as games such as Snatcher, Policenauts, Zone of the Enders, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
He is something of an auteur in the video game community and is best known for creating “cinematic” games within the stealth action genre.
Now with all of that in mind, let's discuss his new horror game.
The Unveiling Of OD
Two years ago, Kojima announced that he would be creating an “immersive horror game” in collaboration with Jordan Peele, and even released a teaser at the 2023 Game Awards.
The game is simply called OD, and is supposedly a third-person survival horror game that promises to be quite groundbreaking. Peele even joined Kojima on stage during the presentation, stating, “I just want to stress, what this man is building here is unlike any other game.”
Nearly 2 years later, we’ve finally seen the game’s first proper trailer, unveiled at a 10th anniversary event for Kojima Productions. The game is incredibly reminiscent of P.T., a demo for the video game Silent Hills. The beautiful combination of puzzles and collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, the demo drummed up a lot of excitement for the series, sadly the game was canceled back in 2014, so Kojima pulled the demo from the PlayStation Store.
While we only see actress Sophia Lillis in this trailer, it’s believed that Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier will also be joining the cast.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Xbox Game Studios, said that the game was “truly visionary," and that “Kojima is innovating in gameplay, story, and player engagement.”
The trailer wasn’t the only reveal, as the two shared that the subtitle of OD is “Knock.” When asked to further explain the title, Kojima said, "There's a different kind of fear Jordan will do; mine is the fear of the knock.”
As it currently stands, we still don’t have an expected time frame or date range, nor any formats the game will be hosted on. It's safe to assume that Xbox will automatically be included in the list, due to its involvement in the process.
Kojima Productions was likely focused on the final products for Death Stranding 2, which came out in June of this year. Hopefully, we will hear some further information about OD sometime in the early new year.
