We Have A Bad Feeling About This
If you grew up with Star Wars books in the 1990s or 2000s, you'll recognize that the story didn’t end with Endor. The old Expanded Universe kept piling on new wars, new Jedi, new family mess, and some very big plotlines that the films never touched. These 20 Legends facts show just how far that older timeline wandered from what the movies decided to show us.
1. The New Republic Took Over
Yes, the New Republic exists in the films, but not at the same level. After Endor, Legends doesn’t leave the Rebels as a scrappy, forever-underdog faction. The older timeline spends a lot more time treating the post-Imperial galaxy like an actual government trying to run itself, not just a rebellion that never stopped rebelling.
2. Luke Married Mara Jade
Movie-only fans never got Mara Jade. Luke's future wife has a long and complicated history, initially working as a smuggler and assassin for Palpatine. After Palpatine's death, she eventually grows closer to Luke, with the two marrying 19 years after the Battle of Yavin.
3. Ben Skywalker
Legends also gave Luke and Mara a child. Ben Skywalker grows up during the Yuuzhan Vong wars, hidden away by his parents for safety. Unlike Kylo Ren, Ben Skywalker never fully falls to the dark side.
4. Han And Leia Had Three Kids
Instead of one son falling to the dark side, the Legends depicted Han and Leia having a set of twins, Jaina and Jacen, then a younger son, Anakin. The next-generation Solo family becomes one of the old EU’s biggest emotional anchors.

5. Somehow, Palpatine Returned
While the films do depict Palpatine's resurrection, the movies bring him back only six years after Return of the Jedi. In Legends, Palpatine returns by transferring his spirit into clone bodies, trying to reclaim the galaxy.
6. Luke Served The Reborn Emperor
This is one of those old EU turns people still argue about. In Dark Empire, Luke puts himself near the reborn Palpatine, acting as his apprentice in an attempt to destroy him from the inside. Eventually, he's seduced by the dark side, but is only saved after Leia intervenes.
7. The Empire Became The Imperial Remnant
In Legends, the Empire doesn’t just collapse into smoke after Endor. It survives in smaller form as the Imperial Remnant, eventually consisting of eight sectors. The Remnant did end up working with the Galactic Alliance for a period of time, but this shaky peace didn’t last long.
8. Thrawn Nearly Turned The War Around
A lot of folks recognize Thrawn, or Mitth’raw’nuruodo, as a Grand Admiral in the Imperial Navy. Canon tells us he was exiled on the planet Perida, and said to have vanished or died during the liberation of Lothal. Legends lore tells us he established his own empire in Wild Space, only returning after the Battle of Endor.
9. Boba Fett’s Life
In Legends, Boba Fett becomes a crucial political figure, even having an important role in the New Republic during the Yuuzhan Vong wars. He was of even greater importance during the Second Galactic Civil War, training one of Han and Leia’s children, Jaina, to defeat her twin brother.

10. Leia Became A Jedi
The movies hint at Leia’s Force potential, but don't do much after that. Legends, however, follow through. Leia's trained as a Jedi, and still has time for a political career. In fact, she succeeds Andor's Mon Mothma after she retires.
11. Chewbacca Died Saving Anakin Solo
This is still one of the old timeline’s roughest gut-punches. In Vector Prime, Chewbacca dies on Serpidal when a moon crashes onto the planet. The hero we know him to be, Chewbacca, stays behind long enough to save Han and Leia’s youngest son.
12. The Yuuzhan Vong Invasion
Legends decided the next war needed to feel bigger than another Imperial campaign, so it brought in the Yuuzhan Vong. The nomadic species nearly destroyed the New Republic, killing over 300 trillion beings during the invasion.
13. Coruscant Fell
Legends didn’t keep the capital safe just because it was familiar. The Yuuzhan Vong conquered Coruscant, renaming it Yuuzhan’tar. Interestingly, the Yuuzhan transform the ecumenopolis back into an organic, jungle-filled world.
14. Jacen Solo
Long before the films introduced Han and Leia's fallen son, Ben, Legends cast one of their children in that role. Jacen Solo falls, takes the name Darth Caedus, and becomes one of the darkest villains in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline.
15. Jaina Solo
Jaina doesn’t get pushed to the side in that story, either. She becomes one of the strongest Jedi of her generation and is the one who has to face Jacen in a tumultuous final battle.
16. Anakin Solo
The younger Solo son never made it anywhere near the canon, though he mattered a lot in Legends. Anakin becomes a promising young Jedi during the Yuuzhan Vong war. Sadly, he dies in combat, which gives the old EU another major loss that we never see on screen.
17. Kyp Durron’s Destruction
Kyp Durron begins his journey as a prisoner of the spice mines. During a series of rampages, he falls to the whims of Sith Lord Exar Kun, stealing a weapon known as the Sun Crusher and destroying the planet Carida. After he's banished, he eventually becomes one of the first Jedi Masters of Luke's new order.
18. Palpatine’s Force Storms
Movie Palpatine is dangerous enough, though the EU adds another layer to his terror. In Legends, Palpatine has a Force storm ability, powerful enough to tear through space-time. A little more intense than the lighting fingers, don't you think?
19. Abeloth
Fans of the films never got the chance to witness Abeloth in all her glory. Known as the Bringer of Chaos, Abeloth becomes an immortal, corrupted force after drinking from the Font of Power and bathing in the Pool of Knowledge. She serves as the primary antagonist in the novel Fate of the Jedi: Outcast.
20. Luke’s Jedi Order
This is one of the clearest splits between Legends and the movies. The Legends show Luke building a successful order, training new generations of Jedi. This context gave many readers the future they thought the films would eventually use.
