Don't Judge a Game By Its Cover
Welcome, unassuming horror fans. You can leave your expectations at the door. You’ll find no innocent adventures, colorful puzzle games, or even cheerful dating simulators here—just veiled nightmares hiding behind totally normal-seeming gameplay. Forget everything you thought you knew about horror games; these 20 titles aren’t afraid to remind you that looks can be deceiving.
1. Doki Doki Literature Club!
Oh, wow! We can’t wait to sit around in this adorable club and write poetry for our friends. Wait, why are our files missing? Why does Monika know everything about us? Why is Yuri so obsessed with knives? Don’t be fooled by the initial cheeriness. It just gives way to disturbing behavior, corrupted dialogue, and psychological horror you never see coming.
2. OMORI
Colorful characters and adorable turn-based battles really make OMORI look like nothing more than a charming RPG about childhood friends. However, it doesn’t take long to dig a little deeper and succumb to a story about trauma, guilt, and the mysterious SOMETHING. You’ll have to relive some horrifying memories, too.
3. Pony Island
Pony Island is probably the most unassuming name you could find—and that’s how it gets you. What begins as a simple arcade game about jumping over obstacles quickly reveals that the software itself has been corrupted. You'll then find yourself manipulating code, navigating strange menus, and questioning whether anything on your screen can be trusted.
4. Cooking Companions
Cooking meals with friendly characters sounds cute enough, doesn’t it? Especially when talking vegetables are involved! Unfortunately, this game quickly strands you inside a remote cabin, where rising floodwaters and dwindling food supplies create desperate circumstances. As it turns out, those adorable vegetables can't distract you from all the horrifying secrets.
5. Buddy Simulator 1984
Imagine playing a retro game that just wants to be your friend. Okay, actually, the more we think about it, the more we should’ve seen what was coming. Either way, Buddy Simulator 1984 is all about an enthusiastic AI that creates personalized adventures designed to keep you entertained. That said, your new digital pal also develops some concerning attachment issues, and it’s not ready for you to move on.
6. Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion
Let’s journey back about ten years ago to a smiling cartoon ghost that welcomes you into a mansion. There are 1,000 rooms, which is already scary enough, but it’s ultimately harmless. Early jumpscares are just adorable cardboard cutouts popping out…until you meet genuinely dangerous creatures that start chasing you. The whole thing falls apart after that.

7. Amanda the Adventurer
Inspired by educational children's television, Amanda the Adventurer asks you to watch old VHS tapes featuring a young girl and her sheep companion, Wooly. Cute, right? Not so fast. Their innocent lessons gradually get sinister as Amanda starts acknowledging your responses and behaving in increasingly threatening ways. She’s onto you, and soon, there’s no right answer.
8. Little Goody Two Shoes
With such beautiful artwork and a charming village setting, Little Goody Two Shoes fooled just about everyone. You play as Elise, a young woman who takes odd jobs, pursues romance, and encounters supernatural threats connected to the woods. The thing is, her journey turns into a nightmare once witchcraft accusations enter the picture.
9. Yuppie Psycho
Starting a new office job probably isn't your idea of a terrifying experience, but Brian Pasternack would like to respectfully disagree. In Yuppie Psycho, his first day involves investigating a mysterious witch who floats around the office, an office filled with dangerous employees and weird supernatural occurrences. And you thought you hated Mondays.
10. Slay the Princess
Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to be the bad guy? To be the guy who actually doesn’t save the princess? Well, this one’s for you. A mysterious narrator instructs you to enter a cabin and kill a princess. Simple enough until conversations with your supposed victim reveal conflicting information. Your choices also dramatically alter her appearance, behavior, and the world around you.
11. Home Safety Hotline
Customer service jobs are scary in their own right, but this one really takes the cake for finding a new career path. As an employee of the Home Safety Hotline, you need to identify strange problems reported by callers—including creatures disguised as ordinary domestic nuisances. Don’t mess up; incorrectly diagnosing something has worse consequences than an unhappy customer.
12. KinitoPET
A friendly virtual assistant shaped like a pink axolotl? How adorable! In KinitoPET, your new desktop companion initially offers all sorts of entertaining activities before getting disturbingly interested in you. Next thing you know, it manipulates the environment and gives even ordinary interactions an uncomfortable sense of unpredictability.
13. Happy Game
Remember what we said about not judging a game by its title? That’s never been more true than right now. Ignore the colorful artwork and childlike characters. In reality, you'll guide a young boy through disturbing nightmares and imaginative puzzles.
14. Bugsnax
Snapping pictures of adorable creatures sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon. On Snaktooth Island, however, eating Bugsnax physically transforms the inhabitants' bodies, and uncovering the island's secrets only pulls the rug out from under you. You’ll be knee-deep in disturbing truths about these seemingly harmless creatures.
15. Dredge
There isn't much about fishing that suggests horror, but it doesn’t take long for Dredge to introduce mutated sea creatures, mysterious relics, and dangerous nighttime encounters. Venturing into the fog after sunset is an especially dumb idea when your character's literal panic affects what happens around the vessel.
16. Duck Season
We all remember renting a video game for the summer, especially Nintendo's classic Duck Hunt. Unfortunately, the nostalgia stops there. Duck Season transforms a straightforward minigame into a disturbing virtual reality experience involving a threatening dog mascot and strange events outside the TV. Its multiple endings don’t make it any less creepy, either.
17. Eversion
Cheerful flowers, colorful platforms, simple treasure-collecting—don’t be fooled. The experience changes pretty quickly once you find out that the protagonist can shift between different versions of the environment. You’ll then jump between progressively darker interpretations of familiar levels. Eventually, even the game's cute music is unrecognizable.
18. Lily's Well
Lily's Well follows a young girl investigating a mysterious cry for help coming from a well near her home. Obviously, things don’t go well. You need to explore the surrounding property and collect materials to construct a rope, but your choices lead to some deeply unpleasant outcomes. The multiple endings encourage a few retries, but you need to steel yourself to play again.
19. Andy's Apple Farm
And here we thought we wouldn’t be fooled by an old educational game. Sure enough, you participate in simple minigames involving Andy and his friends while discovering messed-up clues hidden within the software. We’re talking glitches, secret recordings, and unexpected encounters that reveal a much darker story connected to the game's creation.
20. Inscryption
Inscryption isn’t just a mysterious card game played against a shadowy opponent. You'll sacrifice creatures, too. You’ll also solve escape-room puzzles and encounter talking cards that know more than they're willing to explain. Its constantly changing structure ensures that even after you've learned the rules, there's still plenty to catch you off guard.
