Gaming As An Adult: 20 Things Only Adult Gamers Will Understand

Adult Gamer Things

If you're still playing video games as an adult, you've probably maxed out your wisdom stat by now. With that in mind, here are 20 things most adult gamers do, whether they add to their quality of life or balance the reality of a demanding hobby

1. Requesting Time Off

By now every gamer has probably done this. Your favorite game is getting an update or launching on a certain day. So you request a few days off work so you can play through it with no interruptions. Call it a long mental health weekend or even vacation time, but it's totally worth it.

2. Patch Notes Are News

Whenever your favorite game has a new update, you're reading those patch notes like they're the daily news. You're invested in every little change and if you see something you don't like, you'll be right there in the forums discussing it.

3. It's a Lifestyle

Gaming may have just been something you did to pass time as a kid, but as an adult, it's more so a lifestyle. It's an adjective you would use to describe yourself. You keep up with new games coming out, and have a pretty good handle on consoles to computer controls.

4. Gaming Weekends

Every adult gamer has a moment where they have to turn down plans with friends because they're gaming that weekend. It's simply a rite of passage, and while your friends think you have no life, you know that you value time alone to decompress. That is unless you play stressful multiplayer games, of course.

5. It's Your Sport

Speaking of stressful multiplayer games, for some, these games are like a competitive sport. Some people have actual sports, others have chess, and you have gaming. Whether you like to get on with your friends for a night of Call of Duty or try to reach new ranks in League.

6. Easy To Shop For

You're now the easiest person among your friends and family to shop for. Everyone knows to just buy you a Steam gift card or whatever game is coming out to the console of your choice.

7. So Many Options

As a kid, you might have thought games were for children, and that those mature violent games were far and few in between. But as an adult, you realize most games are actually for adults, with children's games being a smaller genre.

8. Barely Any Time

Of course, even with dedicated weekends and time-off requests, it can still feel like you have no time for games anymore. You straight up have to schedule in free time for games, often trying to squeeze in dinner while you play through.

9. You Mute Voice Chat

The more you play games with annoying audio features, the more likely you are to just mute them as you grow up. You don't want to hear the immature kids screaming, especially when you know what you're doing and would rather focus.

10. You're the Fun Family Member

All the children in your family adore you. You're able to speak their language more easily, and better yet, are able to introduce them to the games that meant so much to you growing up. Better yet, you can even keep up in couch co-op.

11. Slacking Reflexes

Although we hate to admit it, it's clear that with age, our reflexes begin to slip. You might realize you're no longer as good as you once were, and that's honestly okay! You don't have to be the very best to enjoy a game.

12. You Have an Amazing Setup

As a kid, you would play games on your dad's computer, or on that old laptop they let you have. It barely ran, but it got the job done. But now, as an adult, you've had the time and means to invest in a setup that's perfect for long gaming sessions.

13. Paying For Perks

As a kid, you might have had to beg your parents for subscriptions or cosmetics, but as an adult, you can just get whatever you want. Of course, you see the value of money, but if there's a deluxe edition or cosmetic you really want, the only person you have to convince is yourself.

14. You Know Gamer Lingo

Growing up with games, you've probably learned all the gamer lingo, whether it's exclusive to your favorite game or just generally used in the community. To some people, you might sound a little insane when you call someone an NPC, but hey, if the shoe fits.

15. You Rarely Chat

While you still talk to your friends, of course, as an adult, you're less likely to message or type in chat to other random players. You get no joy from hurling insults at them, even if you're winning. You've matured beyond that.

16. Full-Time Jobs

Certain games can feel like full-time jobs! Especially if they involve live servers where you need to constantly check on your base and do daily tasks. It might even feel like you have a kid at home with how often you have to babysit the games.

17. You Game to Relax

As a kid, gaming was all about having fun! You were looking for thrills, adventure, and something to take up your time. But as an adult, you appreciate games that have a slower pace, or simply play games to just decompress after a long day of work.

18. Sound Matters

As an adult gamer, you've invested in good quality headphones, and appreciate the value of sound now more than ever. You really try to lose yourself in video game worlds, and care a lot about seamless integration.

19. Conventions

One of the perks of being an adult gamer is getting to go to all the conventions and meeting like-minded people. Sure, you can go as a kid, but the experience is totally different grown-up. From buying what you want at the artist alleys to dressing up in cosplay, it's all way more exciting!

20. Growing Up With the Games

For some gamers, they were around when the first Zelda or Final Fantasy came out. Either way, they got into certain series young, and got to stick around and watch it grow right beside them. There's something so heartwarming about playing the same franchises decades later.
