By now, you probably know plenty of superhero names thanks to comic books, movies, and TV shows, but there are still a bunch of interesting characters hiding in the shadows. Female superheroes in particular don't get as much limelight as they deserve! That's why in this article, we're highlighting 20 of the most fascinating female superheroes who deserve more recognition for their awesome abilities and personalities.

1. Storm
Despite being one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel history, Storm is often treated more like part of the team rather than the main event. Her ability to control weather is impressive, but it's her leadership, confidence, and royal background that keep fans invested. A solo story centered on her would definitely do well.
2. Zatanna
Zatanna certainly has one of the most entertaining powers in DC Comics because she casts spells by speaking backward. That could've easily resulted in a silly character, but she brings charm, intelligence, and a strong stage presence to every appearance. She deserves more opportunities to show her magic abilities.

3. Vixen
Accessing the abilities of animals through the Tantu Totem, Vixen is a very unique superhero that deserves a chance to showcase her powers. She can channel speed, strength, flight, or agility depending on the situation, so her action scenes never feel repetitive. It’s surprising she hasn’t had a much larger mainstream push already!
4. Jessica Cruz
If you're tired of seeing the same hero, Jessica Cruz brings something different to the Green Lantern universe. With her courage tied closely to fear and anxiety, she doesn’t succeed because she’s fearless, she succeeds because she keeps going even when fear is very real. That makes her an incredibly relatable superhero that deserves more attention.
5. Misty Knight
Stylish, tough, and smart, Misty Knight's got a bionic arm that makes her street-level superhero stories exciting. Her confidence and no-nonsense attitude are a breath of fresh air, and she works especially well in crime-focused plots where detective skills matter as much as fighting ability.
6. Big Barda
Big Barda has the kind of presence that makes you wonder why she isn’t already everywhere. She’s a warrior from Apokolips who turned away from cruelty and chose a better life, which gives her character real emotional weight. She really just needs the solo spotlight once to show how bold, funny, and powerful she is.

7. America Chavez
Not only is America Chavez's ability to punch star-shaped portals between dimensions visually cool, she's also just a great character on her own. She’s confident, direct, and often refreshingly unimpressed by all the chaos around her, which we could easily see helping her to become one of Marvel’s most exciting young heroes.
8. Black Canary
Although Black Canary has been a major DC hero for years, she still hasn't gotten enough attention as a lead character. Her sonic scream is what she's known for, but her hand-to-hand combat skills and leadership instincts are just as impressive. She has the grit of a street-level hero with the confidence of someone who can stand beside the Justice League.

9. Moon Girl
Different from the usual superhero mold, that already makes Moon Girl a worthy superhero of the limelight. As one of Marvel’s smartest characters, Lunella Lafayette brings science, curiosity, and youthful confidence into every story. She’s the perfect character to make Marvel's superhero stories feel fresh again.
10. Hawkgirl
Hawkgirl has a striking look, a fierce fighting style, and a long history in DC Comics. Whether her story leans into reincarnation, alien history, or warrior culture, she has more than enough material for deeper storytelling. Which is why despite how often she appears in teams, she has the presence to carry a solo adventure.
11. Silk
Silk has powers similar to Spider-Man, but her life and personality give her a distinct identity. Cindy Moon spent years isolated, which makes her return to the world emotionally complicated and interesting. She’s witty, fast, and capable, but she also has to rebuild a life she was forced to miss. Her stories can be funny, action-packed, and surprisingly heartfelt when she gets the right attention.
12. Mera
Most people might know Mera because she's closely connected to Aquaman, but honestly, she's a powerful character with plenty of her own story potential. Her control over water gives her an intimidating presence and a commanding edge, and we'd argue a deeper focus on her would make Atlantis feel richer and more complete.

13. Rocket
Rocket, also known as Raquel Ervin, is one of the most important heroes connected to the Milestone universe. Her powers come from an inertia belt, but her real appeal comes from her determination and grounded perspective. Most have never heard of her before, which gives tons of playroom to create an engaging spotlight.
14. Firestar
Firestar has the ability to generate microwave energy, which gives her a power set that’s both impressive and dangerous. She’s moved through different teams and storylines, but never as the central character. Her history with the X-Men, Avengers, and Spider-Man-related stories gives writers plenty of directions to take her.

15. Nubia
As one of DC's most compelling Amazon characters, this alone should convince writers that Nubia should be treated as a main hero. She carries strength, dignity, and a sense of duty that fits naturally within Wonder Woman’s world, but she's able to feel completely separate from Diana.

16. Polaris
Often linked to Magneto, Lorna Dane has her own struggles, beliefs, and emotional battles that deserve deeper exploration. Her power set is incredibly strong and dramatic, but her inner conflicts are where the heart of her stories lie. A focused story could finally let her step forward as more than a supporting mutant.
17. The Question
Renee Montoya’s version of The Question brings detective storytelling into the superhero world in a captivating way. She doesn’t rely on flashy powers, which makes her victories feel especially satisfying for readers. She’s perfect for mystery-driven plots that let intelligence and persistence do the heavy lifting.
18. She-Hulk
She-Hulk is pretty well known, but she still deserves more credit for how flexible her character can be. Jennifer Walters can handle courtroom drama, superhero chaos, comedy, and emotional storytelling without feeling out of place. She's such a multi-dimensional character that deserves more opportunities to showcase her skillset.

19. Bluebird
Also known as Harper Row, Bluebird is one of the more underrated characters connected to Gotham. You know all about the Bat family, which is why a character like her can feel extra refreshing.
