Why Some Trainers Just Don’t Cut It
Pokémon trainers may need to catch ‘em all, but that doesn’t mean every one of them deserves to! Not every so-called trainer is built for greatness; some are careless, some are arrogant, and others make such baffling choices that you can’t help but wonder how they made it past Route 1. We thought it was about time to go through which trainers know their stuff and which ones should retire immediately.
1. Magikarp Salesman
Okay, okay, we know that the Magikarp isn’t a traditional trainer, but he still knowingly sells weak Pokémon at inflated prices to inexperienced trainers. We’re still peeved by his antics, especially because he just wants your money, and that kind of behavior makes him one of the worst people you could trust on your journey.
2. Team Rocket Grunts
Team Rocket grunts are terrible trainers. You know it. We know it. On some level, even Team Rocket must know it! You rarely see them build strong bonds with their Pokémon, and their battle strategies usually fall apart the moment someone puts up real resistance. Even when they have numbers on their side, they still look completely unprepared.
3. Paul
Paul is skilled, we’ll give him that, but he also treats Pokémon like disposable tools instead of partners. His attitude and constant pressure create the kind of environment that drains trust rather than building it, and you can see the damage it causes.
4. Trip
Trip talks like he’s a top-tier rival, which is how we could spot him as the opposite a mile away. In reality, he comes across as smug without backing it up. His habit of looking down on others makes him frustrating to watch, especially when he acts as though basic victories prove he’s superior.
5. Cameron
Cameron is one of the worst trainers around, sorry! He’s so careless that it actively hurts his performance. He does every fumble you could think of: forgetting important details, showing up unprepared, and still somehow stumbling into major battles doesn’t make him charming so much as wildly irresponsible. You can forgive the odd slip, but he makes too many for us to take him seriously.
6. Giovanni
Giovanni has power, resources, and strong Pokémon, so it’s insane to think that he uses all of it in the worst possible way. Instead of representing discipline, he just loves turning training into a means of control. That might make him dangerous, but it definitely doesn’t make him likeable.
7. Ghetsis
Ghetsis is worse than most villains! He manipulates both people and Pokémon, and his entire approach is built on deception. It makes every battle with him feel uglier than it needs to be; when a trainer only uses his beloved Pokémon for domination, there’s really no defending that.
8. Hop
Hop isn’t a bad person, but he spends so much time doubting himself that it shows up in his training. Though we can see the talent is there, he still struggles to establish a steady identity, constantly measuring himself against stronger people around him. It’s more frustrating than anything.
9. Hugh
Hugh’s anger is understandable, don’t get us wrong, but it often controls the way he approaches his battles. Let’s be real, a trainer who lets emotion take over that often is bound to lose perspective, and that weakness shows throughout his journey. Sure, we sympathize, but that doesn’t change his recklessness.
10. Silver
Silver starts as the kind of trainer who thinks strength matters more than compassion, and it makes him hard to root for right out of the gate. His disrespectful attitude also gives you every reason to rank him among the worst, even if he improves later.
Now that we have some of the worst trainers out of the way, it’s time we finally paid some attention to the best ones around!
1. Ash Ketchum
Well, we’re obviously starting with Ash! His growth is one of the clearest success stories in Pokémon. He starts inexperienced, but over time, he becomes adaptable, determined, and far more thoughtful in battle than people often give him credit for.
2. Cynthia
Cynthia has the kind of confidence that never feels forced—her ability speaks for itself. Just look at everything under her belt: her teams are consistently balanced, they’re powerful, and they’re difficult to counter, which is exactly why so many trainers remember battling her as a genuine challenge.
3. Leon
Good ol’ Leon! He represents elite training, bringing talent and preparation together at the highest level. He has the presence of a champion, but what really matters is that he backs it up with strong leadership and a deep understanding of how to command a team. Even when he's under pressure, he rarely looks like he's lost control.
4. Red
Hey, hey, hey, there’s a reason Red has such a lasting reputation among fans. He lets his record and his team do the talking, and that confidence makes him feel even more formidable. By the time you face him, you already know you're dealing with someone who represents the peak of serious training. So, good luck to you.
5. Steven Stone
Steven is one of the best because of how misleading he is; his calm approach never takes away from how dangerous he is in battle. He understands his specialty and turns what could seem predictable into something genuinely difficult to beat. That level of focus is exactly what separates him from the rest.
6. Lance
Lance has always brought authority to the role of top-tier trainer, and his battle style reflects that. His Dragon-type Pokémon already give him a clear identity, and he never comes across like someone relying on image alone. Basically, when you face Lance, you can tell you're up against a guy who expects excellence—and one who usually gets it.
7. Iris
Iris deserves real credit for her intelligence and command in battle, even if she had to grow into it a little. What makes her especially impressive is that her confidence matures along with her skill, so she becomes more complete rather than just more powerful.
8. Blue
Blue is undeniably one of the best! Come on, he combines natural ability with a relentless competitive edge, so how can you top him? Alright, he may be arrogant at times, but that attitude is tied to genuine talent and a constant drive to stay ahead of everyone around him.
9. Diantha
Diantha brings a composed, professional style that suits a champion perfectly. She understands how to build momentum in a battle, and her presence makes it clear that grace and strength can, and should, go together. It’s true, she may not always be the loudest champion, but she’s still easy to recognize.
10. Alder
A great trainer doesn't need to be rigid to be effective. Enter Alder, and his easygoing personality that hides everything from sharp instincts to strong experience. By the time you see how he handles himself, it's hard not to respect what he brings to the table.
