20 Video Game Locations That Were Hiding Something Horrifying

Some Spots Are Better Left Unexplored

Video games have spent a lot of years tricking us. This whole time, we thought they wanted us to explore—some even reward you for doing so! But others can’t wait to punish your morbid curiosity, and some developers hide disturbing discoveries behind the ordinary. Others design entire locations around terrible secrets. Whatever the case, these are the 20 spots you’re better off leaving alone.

1. The Shrine Entrance in Utahonotatari 2

A shrine? In a Japanese horror game? You’re just asking for trouble. One wrong step in this cult horror game, and you’re greeted with what seems like a technical malfunction. After some weird messages and screen disturbances pop up, you then see a horrifying image that was once rumored to be an actual body. It scared players so much that it even spawned its own curse conspiracies.

2. The Uboa Room in Yume Nikki

Most locations in Yume Nikki are already unsettling enough, but one room in the Pink Sea hides something way worse than the odd tingle up your spine. By interacting with the room's light switch, you have a small chance of triggering Uboa, a grotesque face that replaces the friendly-looking Poniko. If you want to go even crazier, you can touch it, which then transports Madotsuki into a disturbing area that offers no explanation for what she just saw.

3. The School Laboratory in Misao

What begins as an ordinary Japanese school becomes a horrific collection of crime scenes in Misao. As Aki searches for her missing classmates, she discovers that the school conceals the consequences of prolonged bullying and an especially cruel murder. If you thought you hated science class before, in this game, it’s even more unsettling.

4. The Hidden Laboratory in Mad Father

The Drevis family mansion initially seems like your typical gaudy, rich-guy mansion. That is, until you go poking around. Exploring its underground laboratories reveals that Aya's father has been conducting horrifying experiments. Finding the victims and remains makes his supposedly loving relationship with his daughter even more complicated.

5. The Chambers of Miyata Clinic in Forbidden Siren

Medical facilities are often the last place you want to go sniffing around, and this game proves why it’s a bad idea. The old Miyata Clinic has an isolation room and hidden underground spots that reveal how deeply the village's activities are connected to its institutions. Uncovering the terror is like watching a car accident you can’t pull away from.

6. The Orphanage in Rule of Rose

At first glance, the orphanage looks like your run-of-the-mill neglected building. But dig a little deeper. When you do, you’ll uncover the cruelty of the Red Crayon Aristocrats, a group of kids who established their own disturbing social hierarchy. All those creepy revelations just had to drag Brown into it, too.

7. The Basement in The Witch's House

Don’t kid yourself. Viola's exploration isn’t just rummaging through a mansion. The whole thing gets a lot worse when you uncover her relationship with the witch Ellen. The true ending also reveals that Ellen manipulated Viola into exchanging bodies, leaving the real Viola trapped inside her own ruined form. What seemed like a desperate attempt to escape a house was actually a horrifying struggle to reclaim a life.

8. The Underground Facility in Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion

We’ve talked about this game before, especially since it’s the most unassuming adventure you’ll ever stumble into. And we mean that. The adorable cardboard monsters near the beginning are just a ploy! With a little advancing, you’ll find the facility's lab has records of experiments involving supernatural specimens. Well, that and evidence of people being subjected to awful conditions.

9. The Hidden Room in Irisu Syndrome!

We hate to break it to you, but this is far from a colorful puzzle game. Files in the game's installation directory actually reveal a disturbing story involving Kyoko Irisu and her classmates—and switching away from the game can trigger nightmarish images. It’s cleverly hidden, though, and if you never examine those files, you can miss the darkness tucked inside the innocent-looking gameplay.

10. The Hospital in Corpse Party

Welcome to Heavenly Host Elementary School. That’s all the kindness you’re going to get here. Empty halls are bad enough, but this game’s hospital chapter will make you beg for the days of creepy classrooms. It doesn’t take long for your environment to become part of a supernatural ordeal, and next thing you know, hospitals are just as horrifying as you thought they’d be.

11. The Water Treatment Plant in Lost in Vivo

A flooded sewer system hardly sounds inviting, although Lost in Vivo makes it worse than the smelly problem you’re expecting. Searching for a missing dog does make it worth it, and the journey takes you through impossible passages, abandoned infrastructure, and areas filled with grotesque creatures. As the story advances, the locations become connected to your personal psychological struggles, giving those seemingly ordinary tunnels a much darker significance.

12. The Kindergarten in Silent Hill

Kindergartens in Silent Hill, of all places? Count us out. You, however, are more than welcome to putz around Midwich Elementary. It’s a horror show, too, filled with nothing but distorted classrooms, unsettling children's drawings, and monstrous inhabitants. The school also holds clues connected to Alessa, whose suffering is central to the nightmare consuming Silent Hill, so it’s awful all around.

13. The Sacrificial Village in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Fatal Frame was always a freak show, but a spot called All Gods Village is somehow so much scarier than we were prepared for. The villagers once performed the Crimson Sacrifice, which involved twins and was meant to prevent disaster from emerging beneath the village. Seeing as how you and your twin sister just so happen to be there…you might want to watch yourselves.

14. The Secret Laboratory in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

There’s nothing inherently scary about decaying buildings. What is scary, however, is when they’re packed with dangerous residents. Ethan can’t catch a break, and the whole fun house he’s forced to maneuver is just terrible secret after terrible secret.

15. The Abandoned Amusement Park in the Park

We all know not to visit an abandoned amusement park in a horror game. But too bad! The Park makes it worse than squeaking merry-go-rounds—and personal. Your search for your missing son reveals disturbing memories and psychological struggles, gradually changing the meaning of the attractions surrounding you. By the end, the park has become inseparable from a tragedy that you’ve struggled to confront.

16. The Village School in Detention

Set in Taiwan during the period of martial law known as the White Terror, Detention transforms Greenwood High School into a nightmare. We’re not talking about the average jump scare, either. Through exploration, you discover the consequences of political persecution and the terrible fate of people connected to an underground group. The whole thing is especially disturbing because the game's historical background draws upon genuine repression.

17. The Secret Room in Ib

Well, this will teach you not to visit any art galleries. What’s supposed to be a normal outing turns into you getting trapped inside the paintings. Behind the gallery's increasingly strange exhibits are dangerous creations, too, and you can bet you’ll encounter the worst of the worst.

18. The Underground Hospital in The Cat Lady

Susan’s experiences take her through several disturbing environments, but the hospital’s probably the worst. Beneath Dr. X’s apparently professional exterior, the doctor’s actually connected to grotesque experiments and the exploitation of vulnerable patients. Not exactly something you want to see when you’re also vulnerable.

19. The Spencer Mansion in Resident Evil

Long before the franchise developed into global conspiracies, the original Resident Evil hid its biggest secrets beneath a mansion. Exploring the underground labs reveals evidence of Umbrella's experiments, including the monstrous Tyrant housed within the facility. Good luck walking through those halls now.

20. The Underground Shelter in Omori

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but these colorful environments actually hide a terrible reality, especially once you uncover the truth about Mari's death. Black Space contains some of the game's most disturbing imagery, and understanding what really happened to Mari turns those locations into deeply upsetting reminders of guilt and grief.
