Then there are the characters people throw into the conversation because they are cool, popular, or dangerous in their own worlds, even if Superman would fold the matchup before the theme music kicked in. Here are ten characters fans think could beat Superman, and ten who absolutely could not.
1. Doctor Manhattan
Doctor Manhattan is the kind of opponent who makes punching feel quaint. He can reshape matter, experience time in ways Superman cannot, and treat physical damage like a minor disagreement with reality. Against someone who can unmake or rearrange the rules of the fight, Superman’s usual advantages start to look less comforting.

2. The Spectre
The Spectre is not just powerful; he is divine judgment in a cape. Superman can fight gods, monsters, and cosmic threats, but the Spectre operates on a different spiritual frequency. If the story lets him act at full scale, this is less of a brawl and more of a verdict.
3. Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is dangerous because she does not need to outmuscle Superman. Reality-warping, probability manipulation, and magic all sit in the uncomfortable category of things Superman cannot simply bench-press. If Wanda gets room to work, the fight can become very strange very quickly.

4. Thor
Thor is one of the few characters who can meet Superman in the physical conversation and still bring something extra. He has godly strength, brutal durability, lightning, combat experience, and a magic weapon in Mjolnir. Fans can argue the details forever, but this matchup at least belongs in the serious pile.

5. Sentry
Sentry is basically the Marvel character designed to make Superman comparisons inevitable. He has absurd strength, speed, durability, energy projection, and a deeply unstable dark side that makes the whole thing worse. If he is written near his upper limits, Superman has a real problem on his hands.

Silver Surfer does not look like a street-fight problem until you remember what the Power Cosmic actually means. He can manipulate energy and matter, survive in deep space, move at wild speeds, and attack from angles Superman is not always built to counter. Jean Grey on her own is already formidable. Jean Grey connected to the Phoenix Force is another conversation entirely. Telepathy, telekinesis, cosmic fire, resurrection themes, and reality-shaking power make her one of those opponents Superman cannot treat like a normal physical threat.

8. Goku
Goku is the fan matchup that will probably outlive all of us. His supporters point to constant growth, martial arts mastery, energy attacks, transformations, and a lifelong habit of getting stronger after fighting things that should have killed him. Whether he wins depends on versions and rules, but fans will never stop putting him across from Superman.

9. Darkseid
Darkseid is already one of Superman’s defining enemies for a reason. He has strength, intelligence, armies, Omega Beams, and the kind of presence that makes every fight feel bigger than the room it starts in. Superman can beat him, but nobody should pretend it is easy.
10. Shazam
Shazam is a serious problem because his power is magic-based, and magic is one of Superman’s most famous uncomfortable zones. He has comparable strength and speed, lightning, durability, and the raw confidence of someone who can throw down with gods while still having kid-brain instincts underneath. In the right circumstances, he absolutely belongs in the debate.

1. Batman
Batman can beat Superman with preparation, kryptonite, specialized armor, psychological leverage, and a story that gives him the right tools. That is the key phrase: with preparation. Dropped into a clean fight without setup, he is still a man in a suit facing someone who can hear his heartbeat from orbit.
2. Wolverine
Wolverine is tough, stubborn, and almost impossible to keep down. That does not mean he can meaningfully hurt Superman in a straight fight. Adamantium claws are scary to most adversaries, but Superman is not most adversaries.

3. Spider-Man
Spider-Man is faster, stronger, and smarter than people sometimes remember. He also has one of the best survival instincts in comics. But Superman operates on a scale where Peter’s agility and webbing become delay tactics, not win conditions.
4. Captain America
Captain America is courage, discipline, and tactical intelligence wrapped in one of fiction’s best moral centers. He would not panic, and he would probably say something noble before getting removed from the battlefield. The shield is legendary, but it is not solving a Kryptonian.

5. Iron Man
Iron Man is dangerous when he has time, resources, and a specific problem to engineer against. In a fair, sudden fight, most standard armors do not give him enough room to survive Superman’s speed and strength. Tony can build a plan, but he cannot always build one fast enough.
6. Homelander
Homelander looks like the evil knockoff answer to Superman, but that is also the problem. He has power in a world that rarely forces him to face anyone on his level. Superman has fought gods, aliens, cosmic tyrants, and himself on a bad day; Homelander has mostly fought people who could not make him nervous.

7. Omni-Man
Omni-Man is brutal, experienced, and absolutely capable of tearing through most superheroes. Against Superman, though, he runs into a higher ceiling. Viltrumite strength is horrifying, but Superman has dealt with threats that hit harder, move faster, and bring more than just violence to the table.
8. The Hulk
The Hulk is tricky because the angrier he gets, the worse the fight can become. But many standard versions still have trouble with Superman’s speed, flight, range, and ability to remove the fight from the ground entirely. Hulk can make it ugly; Superman can make it strategic.
9. Deadpool
Deadpool would survive longer than he should, mostly because that is his brand. He would talk, regenerate, annoy everyone involved, and possibly make a joke about licensing. But winning is a different matter, and Superman can end the actual fight without needing to end Deadpool permanently.
10. The Punisher
The Punisher is terrifying because he is prepared, ruthless, and very good at turning human weakness into a target. Superman is not a human weakness problem. Frank Castle can bring every gun in the van and still be dealing with a man who can melt the van from the sky.
