Diehard Fans Have Spent Years Debating Bioshock’s Best Lines, But The Coolest Stuff Was Hidden The Whole Time

Diehard Fans Have Spent Years Debating Bioshock’s Best Lines, But The Coolest Stuff Was Hidden The Whole Time

Where Rapture Keeps Its Best Writing

With a franchise this good, it’s hard to land on just a few favorite quotes. You’ve probably seen all the good stuff already, but BioShock’s best writing often isn’t on the main path; it’s tucked into audio diaries on half-buried desks, played through scratchy radios, or triggered only when you wander into the “wrong” room. With that, it’s time we explored the best secrets off the beaten path, and why this franchise still hasn’t lost its top marks.

1. Parasite Expectations

“On the surface, the Parasite expects the doctor to heal them for free…” You know, Andrew Ryan is already unlikable enough, but this was just the cherry on top of his villainy. If you want to torment yourself with a closer look into his mind, you can find the whole thing in the Medical Pavilion, sitting on the counter of Enwell Life and Health Group.

2. Higher Standards

“With ADAM… the flesh becomes clay.” Yeah, the Medical Pavilion is going to show up a lot, and for good reason! When Dr. Steinman talks, you can practically hear the scalpel grin, and this is the moment that so-called medical genius stops being impressive and becomes a threat.

3. Limits of Imagination

“What if now it is not my skill that fails me… but my imagination?” Yes, we’re back with Steinman, and yes, we’re back in the Medical Pavilion. At this point, he’s just trying to blame art for what is really an obsession, but what truly makes it jarring is that it’s self-pity disguised as philosophy.

4. Love for Science

“I was in a German prison camp… only sixteen… when I realized I have love of science.” Man, there are just…so many things to pick apart in this audio. Brigid Tenenbaum’s admission is chillingly plainspoken, and you can only find it as an audio diary in the Medical Pavilion (tucked near a Health Station). The whole diary frames her brilliance as survival, not glamour, which makes her guilt feel even heavier down the road.

5. The Saturnine

“They dress up in leaves and call themselves the Saturnine. Please.” We love a good Julie Langford clapback. You can find The Saturnine in Arcadia, off the more easily skipped side routes, where all of her complaints are scattered. It’s worth a look, too—it shows how even Rapture’s “elite” hobbies are just more delusions.

6. Market Maintenance Code

It’s not every day you want to hear Pablo Navarro’s voice, but his little “Anyway, the code is 0512,” was the best kind of security breach. Why? Because it shows that Rapture’s collapse isn’t only riots; it’s also lazy shortcuts that turn into vulnerabilities. That’s exactly why it’s worth digging around for in Hephaestus.

7. Ryan Takes F Futuristics

Talk about an understatement. As soon as Bill McDonagh mutters that he’s resigned from the Council, you already know it’s too late. You can find Ryan Takes F Futuristics in Hephaestus Central Control, and it’s a great way to bring down your mood.

8. Great Chain Moves Slowly

“I will make no proclamations, I will dictate no laws.” Is there anything better than a game that rewards players’ exploration? If you scour for Great Chain Moves Slowly, you’ll hear Andrew Ryan doing something he seldom does: trying to sound calm while the city’s basically on fire.

9. A Man or a Parasite

“A Man builds. A Parasite asks, ‘Where is my share?’” Alright, we’re not big on the comparison, but there’s no denying the line goes hard. Rapture justifies cruelty, and Ryan’s threat is pretty much aimed directly at you, so there’s no way to walk away from this unscathed. You can pick it up in the Hephaestus Central Control—if you dare.

10. Genetic Arms Race

“There’s an arms race on here in Rapture.” Yeah, McDonagh doesn’t mean warfare. He’s talking about the city’s violence and how fast it escalated now that weapons are literally in people’s blood. It’s a grim listen, but you can find Genetic Arms Race in Hephaestus.

11. Kyburz Door Code

“I put a couple of drinks in him… he’s telling me he’s got the code… keyed to the date of Australia Day.” Remember what we said about not wanting to hear Navarro’s voice? This is another one of those times. The Kyburz Door Code diary is in Hephaestus, and should you find it, you can learn all about how quickly Rapture’s “geniuses” can be undone.

12. Smuggling Ring

It’s always rough listening to how things used to be, and Smuggling Ring (found in Neptune’s Bounty) is one of the rare lines that lets you glimpse into pre-chaos Rapture. Sullivan doesn’t even turn into a speech—he just delivers like a tired professional talking to himself.

13. Have My Badge

“If Ryan and his crew have their law, then they can have my badge.” Jeez, well said, Sullivan. The Have My Badge audio diary is an incredible find located in Neptune’s Bounty, and you haven’t really played Bioshock without hearing it. It’s a whole spiel about how, in a city that pretends it’s free, resignation doesn’t protect you.

14. Bathysphere Keys

“Anybody in the ballpark genetically will be able to come and go.” Sullivan’s line might not seem like much when you first hear it, but it pays off in a big way down the road. You can find it in Bathysphere Keys—and once you’ve heard it, the incoming manipulation feels less like game mechanics and a lot more like worldbuilding.

15. Finding the Sea Slug

If you wander around Neptune’s Bounty long enough, you might just stumble across Tenenbaum’s “miracle cure.” Look for a table in the Upper Wharf area to hear the exact moment when a miracle turns into a temptation…and all the nonsense that happens because of it.

16. Picked Up Timmy H.

“Now the eggs are in the scramble.” This one’s so folksy it almost disguises the brutality underneath. Almost. You can find this devastating police chatter in Neptune’s Bounty, though be warned, you’ll probably wish you hadn’t heard it.

17. Masha Come Home

When Mariska Lutz asks, “Who needs a child to save a city?” we didn’t really have an answer. All we had was one of the most devastating lines in the game, found in Neptune’s Bounty. It’s a heartbreaking moment that completely warps your understanding of the Little Sisters. The more we think about it, the more it feels like uncovering a family tragedy piece by piece.

18. New Year’s Eve Alone

“Here’s a toast to Diane McClintock, silliest girl in Rapture,” Har har, Diane. There’s nothing worse than listening to all that loneliness, but this is what happens when we explore every nook and cranny. It’s a small human moment against the backdrop of catastrophe, and you’ll find it inside Kashmir Restaurant.

19. Musical Insult

Who here remembers Sander Cohen’s line, “Of all the worthy artists in Rapture, why you continue to devote column inches…”? We hope you do ‘cause it’s one of the coolest in the franchise! Musical Insult is in Fort Frolic, and it shows Cohen isn’t just eccentric—he’s authoritarian, petty, and ready to turn culture into punishment.

20. “That’s Better”

If this list has taught us anything, it’s that those words mean trouble—and they did. “Say goodbye to those two blowhards, and hello to an evening with Sander Cohen!” If you dig hard enough, you’ll hear this as a Fort Frolic radio message. And, if you dig hard enough, you’ll have to sit through Cohen narrating the city’s descent, all like it’s entertainment.
