Why Samwise Gamgee Is The Ultimate Side Character

Behind every great hero is a number of awesome sidekicks who stick by them when things get difficult. It's true for every fandom and franchise, but we'd argue that no fictional companion has ever taken that more seriously than Samwise Gamgee. Throughout The Lord of the Rings, one of the world's most beloved stories, Sam proves himself time and time again to Frodo. He might have started out as a humble gardener, but he becomes something far greater than that: a character that fans love and root for.

What makes Sam especially memorable is that he doesn't become some overpowered warrior or strong fighter; he stays exactly true to who he was at the start. His courage comes from loyalty, determination, and the simple decision to keep moving when giving up would be far easier. Honestly, calling him a side character feels wrong, even if that role is precisely what makes his contribution to the story so incredible and impressive.

He Defines What Genuine Loyalty Looks Like

If you ever need to understand what true loyalty looks like, just watch what Sam does. It's safe to say his devotion to Frodo goes far beyond accompanying a friend on an unpleasant trip. Not only does he leave behind his comfortable life to travel through increasingly dangerous territory without a guarantee he'll return, but he repeatedly refuses to let Frodo face everything alone. He's there to shoulder every little burden with him.

This loyalty becomes especially important to the quest when Frodo's ability to withstand the ring starts to weaken. He's a strong little hobbit, but the ring can't be stopped by anyone! The moment Sam recognizes and sees that change happening, he doesn't walk away and call it quits. He becomes even more patient and understanding of Frodo, and continues to watch over him, carry the supplies, and take care of practical responsibilities his friend is no longer able to do.

If anything, Sam's relationship with Gollum also demonstrates how his loyalty is anything but passive; it's at the forefront of his character! His reactions might not be perfect all the time, but his ability to stand up against Gollum when he becomes suspicious says a lot. Sam isn't just agreeing with everything Frodo says; he's going a step beyond to actively try to keep him alive, even if that means going toe-to-toe with their shady guide.

His Courage Feels Remarkably Human

Unlike many of Middle-earth’s legendary figures, Sam isn’t a warrior, king, wizard, elf, or even an experienced adventurer. He’s a gardener from the Shire who enjoys familiar surroundings, good meals, and a relatively uncomplicated life. It might not make him extraordinary, but it does highlight his bravery and courage even more, because we know deep down in our hearts just how terrified he is, just as we would be.

As a result, one of Sam’s greatest moments comes when he faces Shelob, an enormous spider that anyone would be shaking to face. But after Frodo is attacked, Sam doesn't waste time preparing a strategy, he fights instantly, because someone he cares about desperately needs him, and that straightforward motivation makes the scene especially powerful.

Sam even carries the One Ring for a short time, even though he knows how incredibly powerful and devastating it is to those who wear it. Unlike several characters who become consumed by the possibility of possessing it, he ultimately returns it to Frodo, further showcasing his strength and just how grounded his priorities truly are. He isn't brave because he wants to be, he is because he has to be.

He Helps Frodo Finish An Impossible Journey

By the time Frodo and Sam reach Mordor, it's hard to remember the rolling hills of the Shire when everything around them is grim, dark, and dangerous. Just one look on their faces and you can see all that hunger, pain, and exhaustion kicking in. But when the going gets tough, Sam remains the person responsible for finding enough hope for the both of them. Frodo may have run out of it, but Sam, he never gives up.

As one of the most heartwarming scenes in the entire franchise, Sam literally carries Frodo when his friend can no longer manage the climb toward Mount Doom. It’s one of the clearest demonstrations of what his character has represented throughout the story: he can’t carry Frodo’s burden for him, but he can carry Frodo.

At the end of the day, what makes Samwise Gamgee such an exceptional side character is that he never needs to take Frodo’s place to become indispensable. He doesn't outshine anyone else, he doesn't crave the spotlight; he's there to be the helping hand that rids the evil for good. He supports the central hero without losing his own personality, weaknesses, humor, desires, and accomplishments, and that's a hard feat to accomplish.
