The Moments That Left Our Jaws on the Floor
Role-playing games are famous for absorbing us in massive worlds, letting us customize our characters, and giving us stories that span dozens of hours. There is nothing quite like the sudden realization that the quest you have been pursuing for fifty hours is built on a massive lie. When a developer pulls the rug out from under you perfectly, it completely changes how you view everything you just experienced.
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
You spend the entire game hunting down the mysterious Sith Lord Malak while trying to stop his fleet from taking over the galaxy. Along the way, the Jedi praise your incredible connection to the Force and build you up as their ultimate weapon. The truth hits like a freight train when Malak reveals that you actually are Darth Revan, his former Sith master who lost his memories.

2. Final Fantasy VII
Aerith Gainsborough is positioned as the central heroine of the story, making her feel completely safe from permanent harm according to traditional gaming rules. When the villain Sephiroth drops from the ceiling and fatally stabs her midway through the adventure, it shocks the entire gaming community. You are left mourning a beloved party member whose healing abilities you probably relied on heavily during battles.
3. Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger’s story centers around gathering allies to fight against an alien consciousness called Lavos. During a showdown at the bottom of a submerged castle, Crono gives his life so his friends can live. Losing your silent, flame-haired main character so suddenly completely upends the narrative structure of the game.
4. BioShock
This genre-bending game executes its RPG storytelling aspects superbly. You are under the illusion that you are following the helpful guidance of Atlas on your journey. At the end of BioShock, you discover that every time someone said, “Would you kindly,” they were manipulating you.
5. NieR:Automata
While playing as android 2B, you experience the game as a battle to win Earth back for the humans on the Moon. When playing as 9S and accessing the other story missions, you learn the truth. The humans were extinct before you even launched to save Earth.
6. Persona 5
The stylish Phantom Thieves are seemingly outsmarted when the brilliant detective Goro Akechi catches the protagonist and executes him in an interrogation room. Just when you think you have hit a tragic game over screen, the story reveals that your team anticipated the betrayal months in advance. You actually trapped the traitor in a cognitive world simulation, meaning the execution was entirely staged with a fake double.
7. Xenoblade Chronicles
The protagonist wields the powerful Monado blade to save his people from evil machines. You discover throughout the game that it was a gift from the future to save humanity. You learn the truth when Zanza, a dark deity, takes over Shulk’s body. Not only was your weapon controlling you, but it was trying to destroy every life-form in existence.
8. Dragon Age: Inquisition
The Trespasser DLC reveals shocking information that completely alters your dynamic with a character. Solas, your calm elven wanderer, shows up at the end of the game as the legend of the Dread Wolf. He confesses to creating the Veil that contains all demons and plans to destroy it.
9. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
Unlike most RPGs, Baten Kaitos hides the truth about who the protagonist really is. You serve as Kalas’ guardian angel and command his every move. Once you reach the climax, he betrays everyone and runs off with the ancient treasures. You have to side with another character to undo all of the damage that he caused.

10. Fallout: New Vegas
Tracking down the man in the checkered suit who left you in a shallow grave seems like the ultimate goal of your journey. Once you finally confront Benny in New Vegas, you realize his assassination attempt was just a tiny drop in a massive political bucket. The fate of the entire Mojave Wasteland suddenly lands squarely on your shoulders as multiple factions try to recruit you.
11. Jade Empire
Your martial arts master, Master Li, guides you from childhood and sends you on a grand quest to save the empire from a corrupt emperor. After you defeat the final obstacles, Li turns on you and strikes you down to steal the power of a water dragon for himself. He deliberately trained you to be flawed so that he could easily defeat you whenever it suited his ultimate plan.
12. Undertale
If you treat Undertale like any other RPG, you massacre the monster population for EXP. However, when you make it to the end of the game, your assumptions are flipped. The adorable skeleton named Sans tells you that EXP stands for "Execution Points." He then mocks you for destroying innocents with your lofty level.
13. Suikoden II
The silent protagonist shares a beautiful sibling-like bond with his best friend, Jowy. After the war between their homeland separates them, Jowy joins the enemy nation. You watch as your friends are forced to fight on opposite sides while trying to protect one another.
14. Mass Effect
During your adventures, Shepard talks to an ancient Geth AI that changes your perspective. You are no longer worried about the machines because they aren’t the true enemy. Instead, you’re fighting against the Reapers, colossal starships that hunt all life-forms. Everything you knew about the galaxy was so small compared to the universe.
15. Radiant Historia
Stocke jumps through time with his mystical book to save his world from dying. You quickly learn that there are two different timelines that you must fix to stop the desertification. When you do reach the end of the game, your actions are causing the world to suffer.
16. Cyberpunk 2077
The biochip keeping you alive contains the digital consciousness of a deceased rocker named Johnny Silverhand. This chip is actively overwriting your brain, meaning you are slowly fading away while a ghost takes over your body. The narrative turns into a frantic race against your own hardware rather than a standard corporate thriller.
17. Live A Live
You play through seven distinct historical eras featuring unique heroes before unlocking a medieval chapter centered around a noble knight named Oersted. After losing his princess and being framed for a crime he did not commit, Oersted completely succumbs to his despair. He willingly transforms into Lord Odio, the ultimate demon king whom all the previous heroes were fighting across time.

18. Bravely Default
Bravely Default’s subtitle is "Where the Fairy Flies," which you thought referred to Airy. As the story progresses, the letters reorganize themselves to say "Airy Lies." Not only was she misleading you about her species, but she was an actual demon.
19. Bloodborne
You start off thinking that you are just playing a standard horror game. As you uncover more about Yharnam’s history, the monsters evolve into nightmares. They aren’t horror-based enemies, but mammoth creatures from space.
20. Planescape: Torment
You wake up in a body with scars covering your skin, completely unaware of your past. Throughout your journey, you piece together what happened in your previous lives. Each one of your past selves was an evil man who used his power for wicked schemes.
