The iPhone Gets Some Serious Upgrades
The much-anticipated iPhone 18 is out now, and it brings a fresh round of upgrades, with some of the biggest changes centered on cameras, performance, battery life, connectivity, and AI. A few features are immediately noticeable, while others work quietly in the background to make the phone faster and easier to use. Apple has also pushed further into pro-level photography and video tools without forgetting the everyday improvements most people will actually appreciate. Here are 20 of the most exciting new features of the iPhone 18.
1. Variable Aperture Main Camera
The 48MP Fusion Main camera can now physically adjust its aperture, something no previous iPhone camera could do. Six tiny blades change how much light enters the lens and how much of your photo stays in focus. The phone can handle this automatically, but photographers also have the option to take control themselves.
2. Better Low-Light Photography
That adjustable aperture becomes particularly useful when you’re shooting somewhere dark. The camera can open as wide as f/1.48 to let in more light, helping Night mode capture brighter and more detailed images. It should mean fewer situations where an otherwise great nighttime photo turns into a murky mess.
3. Manual Camera Controls
Apple is giving experienced photographers much more control over how their pictures turn out. The new Pro controls let you manually change settings including aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, while a histogram helps you judge exposure. You can also customize the Camera app so your most-used settings are easier to reach.
4. Sharper Group Photos
Getting everyone in focus during a group photo can be surprisingly difficult, especially when people are standing at different distances from the camera. The iPhone 18 Pro can narrow its aperture to f/4, increasing the depth of field so more of the scene remains sharp. That should make those big family and group shots considerably easier to get right.
5. A New Computational Imaging System
Apple has also changed what happens to a photo after you press the shutter button. A new computational imaging pipeline works with the upgraded Main camera sensor to produce sharper images with more detail. You may never see all the processing happening behind the scenes, but you should notice the results in your camera roll.
6. More Customizable Photographic Styles
Photographic Styles now give you even more control over the finished look of an image. New texture and grain adjustments let you change the character of photos while the system also accounts for colors and skin tones. It’s a great option if you like giving your pictures a particular look without editing every shot afterward.
7. Cinematic Effects After You Record
You no longer have to make every creative decision before filming a video. Videos recorded at up to 60 fps can have Cinematic effects applied afterward, giving you more freedom when editing. This can save a great clip that didn’t have the look you wanted when you originally shot it.
8. 4K Dolby Vision Time-Lapse
Time-lapse videos are getting a major quality boost on the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple now allows them to be captured in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR, giving landscapes, city scenes, and other long recordings significantly more detail and dynamic range, turning a feature that’s easy to overlook into a much more viable video tool.
9. Improved Audio Mix
Good video isn’t much use when the audio makes everyone difficult to hear. Apple has upgraded Audio Mix with new algorithms designed to produce clearer voices, and the feature can now isolate music as well. That gives anyone shooting videos on their phone more flexibility without immediately reaching for separate editing software.
10. Apple Reference Image
Apple Reference Image is one of the more unusual additions to the iPhone 18 Pro camera. In Reference mode, the phone can create an authenticated version of what its camera sensor originally captured, which can later be compared with an edited photo. With manipulated and AI-generated imagery becoming increasingly common, that could be especially useful for photographers and journalists who need to verify an image’s authenticity.

11. A Smaller Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island is still here, but it doesn’t take up quite as much screen space anymore. Apple moved part of the Face ID hardware beneath the display, allowing the visible cutout to shrink while keeping Face ID intact. It’s not a completely uninterrupted screen yet, but the front of the phone looks a little cleaner.
12. Three Live Activities at Once
The smaller Dynamic Island actually manages to display more information than before. It can show as many as three Live Activities simultaneously, so you can keep tabs on several ongoing events without constantly opening apps. That could be particularly useful when you’re tracking three things at the same time.
13. The New A20 Pro Chip
At the heart of the iPhone 18 Pro is Apple’s A20 Pro, built using a new 2-nanometer manufacturing process. It features a six-core CPU along with architectural changes aimed at improving demanding tasks and AI processing. For most people, that translates to an iPhone that should feel fast now and remain capable as apps become more demanding.
14. Much Faster Graphics
Mobile gaming and graphics-heavy apps get a particularly noticeable performance upgrade. Apple says the new seven-core GPU can deliver up to 40 percent faster graphics performance than the A19 Pro. Games with complicated environments, video-editing apps, and other visually demanding software should have considerably more power to work with.
15. A More Powerful Neural Engine
The A20 Pro includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 cores devoted to AI-related processing. Apple says it offers twice the AI processing power of the A19 Pro, helping the phone run increasingly complex models directly on the device. That matters more as Apple builds additional intelligence features into everyday apps and camera functions.
16. Apple’s C2 Cellular Modem
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple’s next-generation C2 cellular modem system. Apple says it improves cellular quality and reliability while delivering faster uploads than the previous C1X and using 15 percent less energy. Better efficiency is particularly welcome because your modem is working constantly whenever you’re away from Wi-Fi.
17. Wi-Fi 7 & Bluetooth 6
Wireless connectivity gets another upgrade thanks to Apple’s N1 networking chip. The iPhone 18 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, giving it newer standards for everything from internet connections to accessories and smart-home devices. You may not immediately notice the difference, but it helps prepare the phone for the next generation of wireless products.

18. Better Cooling for Demanding Tasks
Apple has redesigned the phone’s vapor chamber so it can remove heat more effectively during intensive use. The new system has three times the surface area of the previous generation and helps the A20 Pro maintain higher performance for longer periods. That’s particularly important during gaming, video editing, and other tasks that can make a smartphone heat up quickly.
19. A Big Jump in Battery Life
Battery life is one of the biggest practical improvements in this generation, particularly on the Pro Max. Apple rates eSIM-only versions for up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max. The phones can also reach about 50 percent charge in roughly 15 minutes with a compatible wired setup, making a quick top-up much more useful.
20. A Much Smarter Siri
Siri AI is rolling out in beta with iOS 27, and it’s designed to understand far more of what you’re doing on your phone. It can use information from messages, emails, photos, and onscreen content to help answer questions or perform actions, while a new Camera mode lets Siri respond to what you’re looking at. Apple is also emphasizing on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to handle these increasingly personal AI features.
