The Secret Lives of Superheroes
Have you ever wondered why your favorite heroes do what they do? Most of these iconic characters didn't just wake up one day and decide to put on spandex; they usually had to go through a pretty wild or tragic ordeal first. Whether it's an alien landing in a cornfield or a billionaire getting lost in a cave, these backstories are what make the characters feel human despite their incredible powers.
1. Superman
The Man of Steel started his journey on the dying planet Krypton, where his scientist father placed him in a small escape pod. He landed in Kansas and was raised by the Kents, who taught him the strong moral values he uses today. Because our yellow sun is much more powerful than the red one from his home, he's able to fly and lift buildings with ease.
2. Spider-Man
Peter Parker was a goofy teen who got bitten by a radioactive spider during a science project. He attempted to profit from his agility and ability to climb walls by becoming a wrestler before his life took a turn. After his Uncle Ben passed, Peter decided to use his powers for good.
3. Batman
Bruce Wayne witnessed the passing of his parents, which drove him to want to protect society from criminals. He became proficient in countless martial arts and high-tech sciences before returning to his Gotham mansion. He uses the guise of a scary bat to frighten criminals and combat his own childhood fear of bats.
4. Wonder Woman
Diana began her life on the hidden island of Themyscira, which is populated entirely by elite Amazon warriors. She was sculpted from clay and given life by Greek gods, granting her incredible strength and the famous Lasso of Truth. When a pilot crashed near her home, she decided to leave her paradise to protect the rest of the world from the horrors of war.
5. Iron Man
Tony Stark was kidnapped by terrorists and forced to build a missile while in their custody. He built himself a suit of high-tech armor to keep his heart pumping and escape his prison. From that point forward, he dedicated his life to ending violence with his intelligence and technological gifts.
6. The Flash
Barry Allen worked as a forensic scientist for the police department when a stray bolt of lightning struck a cabinet full of chemicals in his lab. The resulting explosion doused him in a strange mixture that gave him the ability to move at superhuman speeds. Now he spends his time protecting Central City while juggling his job as a CSI investigator.
7. Black Panther
King T’Challa of Wakanda consumed a special herb that awakens the Black Panther genes inside him. He wears an armored suit of vibranium that allows him to absorb most attacks and defend himself. He rules over a mostly hidden African nation that has highly advanced technology.
8. Captain America
Steve Rogers was scrawny and weak during WWII, so he signed up for an experiment that would give him superpowers. They injected him with a serum that allowed his body to become the healthiest it could possibly be. He became America’s living symbol of justice after the scientist who created the serum was assassinated.
9. Hulk
Bruce Banner was working at a gamma bomb experiment site when he stumbled upon a young teenager fleeing the enemy. He saved the boy’s life but was caught in the explosion and became the Hulk whenever he became angry or agitated. The Hulk becomes stronger every time he changes, so he is seeking a cure.
10. Green Lantern
Hal Jordan was an average guy working as a test pilot until something big happened. An alien passed away and sent his green power ring to Earth looking for a Lantern, and it chose Hal. He wields it like a sword and can create anything he can envision with his willpower because he can overcome fear.
11. Wolverine
Wolverine was born with super-healing abilities and retractable bone claws on his hands. A shady government group hunted him down and bonded his skeleton with adamantium, which is like steel but way stronger. It was excruciating for Wolverine, but now he has the hard exterior to match his sharp interior.
12. Thor
Thor is based on the Norse God of Thunder, and his father banished him from their homeland, Asgard. He lived among humans until he proved he was worthy of his powers again, which include his magical hammer Mjolnir. Thor now protects not only Asgard, but also his allies in the Marvel Universe.
13. Storm
When Ororo Munroe was young, she gained the ability to control the weather wherever she went. She became known as a goddess back in Africa, but left when Professor X recruited her for the X-Men. Her mutant weather powers give her the ability to shoot lightning and fly on air currents.
14. Daredevil
Matt Murdock became blind as a child after heroically saving an elderly man from a radioactive truck. His other senses sharpened to superhuman levels, allowing him to perceive things like a radar signal. Matt works during the day as a lawyer but patrols his crime-ridden neighborhood at night.
15. Aquaman
Arthur Curry thought he was just the son of a lighthouse keeper until he found out his mother was royalty. The Queen of Atlantis taught him how to talk to sea creatures and breathe underwater. He rules over the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and uses his gifts to protect its inhabitants.

16. Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff was discovered by Russians and trained from childhood to be an assassin. The Red Room operation taught her to be stealthy and tough as they honed her skills for years. She turned to the other side and went to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. so she could fight for good.
17. Doctor Strange
World-renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange wrecked his hands in a car accident and lost his career. He tried to heal them by going to the Himalayas and meeting the Ancient One, who taught him the mystic arts. Stephen puts his skills to good use now by defending Earth from magical attacks.

18. Shazam
A wizard discovered Billy Batson as a young orphan living on the streets and chose him. When Billy speaks the Wizard’s name, he is struck by magical lightning and becomes a grown superhero. Shazam has the strength and speed of Hercules, the flight of Mercury, and more.
19. Jean Grey
One of the founding X-Men, Jean Grey is a telepathic and telekinetic mutant. She became so powerful when she merged with the Phoenix Force that she gained cosmic powers. The Phoenix amplified her telekinetic energy and gave her its own astronomical power in return.
20. Fantastic Four
The Fantastic Four were exploring the cosmos and stole a spaceship that blasted them with cosmic rays. Each of them gained powers after the exposure altered their genetic code. Mister Fantastic stretches, Invisible Woman can turn invisible, Thing has rock-like skin, and the Human Torch can engulf himself in flames.
