Superhero Names Make a Big First Impression
So much of a superhero's identity is tied to their name, so if you want to be taken seriously right away, you've got to be associated with the right words. Just take these 20 heroes, for instance. Some of them know how to make an entrance with a name that's worthy of their abilities, while others, unfortunately, just land a little flat.
1. Ant-Man Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
Ants are very strong given their size, but because of how tiny these insects are, their name doesn't exactly carry much weight. So, despite Ant-Man being a major Marvel hero, the last thing you're thinking when you first hear it is, "That guy's strong."
2. Squirrel Girl Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
Yes, Squirrel Girl is a real Marvel superhero, and if you're hearing it for the first time, you're definitely thinking about how it sounds more cute than scary. Sure, she has enhanced abilities and have beaten some pretty intense enemies, but you definitely don't get that from her name alone.

3. Matter-Eater Lad Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
A name that's too literal sometimes works against its favor. Just take Matter-Eater lad for example. He's a real DC Comics hero from the Legion of Super-Heroes, but his name leaves something more to be desired. His ability to eat almost any form of matter can solve problems that brute strength can’t, but the name doesn’t have much dramatic force that makes it feel mighty.
4. Bouncing Boy Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
Bouncing Boy is another real DC hero from the Legion of Super-Heroes, but we're guessing you've never heard of him. Because compared to others with much more powerful names, Bouncing Boy feels too playful that it's childish. The issue is that “bouncing” feels more cheerful than threatening.
5. Beast Boy
Sure, beast can sound really mighty in a name, but when you throw in boy right after it, you're immediately thinking of someone young and still working their way up to becoming strong. So it's a superhero name that's halfway there!

6. Batman
Let's be honest for a moment. Does Batman really sound as strong as we know the character to be? If you were hearing it for the first time, you might think more along the lines of "weird" or "strange" rather than "powerful." And we wouldn't blame you! After all, bats aren't the mightiest creatures on the planet.
7. Spider-Man
Just like Batman or Ant-Man, spiders don't feel like the most powerful of creatures on the planet when they can easily be crushed beneath our feet. We know the character is incredibly strong because of how prevalent he is in media, but if you never heard of Spider-Man before, would you be thinking he's as strong as he is?
8. Robin Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
As Batman's trusty sidekick, it's turns out the two of them together don't make for the most menacing-sounding dynamic duo. Robin is one of DC’s most famous superhero identities, but the name itself sounds gentle because it comes from a small bird. That doesn’t take away from the character’s importance, but without the history attached to it, you might not expect Robin to be as dangerous as he is.
9. Hawkeye Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
Hawkeye is a popular Marvel hero and a founding Avenger in many versions of the team, but the name is fairly understated. It suggests excellent aim rather than overwhelming strength, which fits Clint Barton perfectly, but upon first hearing it, feels like impactful.
10. Kitty Pryde Doesn’t Sound Very Powerful
Kitty Pryde is a beloved Marvel mutant with exceptional abilties, but her name sounds friendly and approachable, not dangerous or powerful. Her name gives you zero insight into just how formidable she can truly be.

1. Superman
Superman is one of the most direct superhero names ever created, and that simplicity is exactly why it works. The name tells you immediately that this is someone beyond ordinary human limits. When you hear “Superman,” you understand that strength is central to the character.
2. Wonder Woman
As soon as she lands onto the battlefield, you're thinking grand, heroic, and confident, especially with a name like Wonder Woman. The word “wonder” gives her identity a sense of awe, while “woman” makes the name feel direct and iconic. It sounds powerful because it presents her as extraordinary right from the get go.
3. Thor
Yes, Thor has an immediate advantage because the name already belongs to a god of thunder, but that just shows a name itself can be strong. You hear it and immediately expect someone massive, commanding, and hard to stop.
4. The Hulk
Given that this character is just pure brute strength in living form, the Hulk needed a worthy name to match and it delivered. Right away, he sounds huge, rough, and physically overwhelming. There’s no mystery about what kind of threat he represents, and that directness helps the name land.
5. Storm
Short and simple names can work well too, as long as the meaning gets across right away. Take Storm for example; as a member and leader of the X-Men, she more than lives up to her title. It also fits her calm authority, which makes it feel even more effective.

6. Black Panther
Sleek, serious, and dangerous, these are all flashing through your mind the moment you hear the name Black Panther. It's a title that also suggests speed, intelligence, and controlled aggression, all of which fit T’Challa as a king and protector.
7. Iron Man
Iron Man has a name that sounds solid, durable, and difficult to break, immediately creating a sense of power and might. Even though Tony Stark’s strength comes from technology rather than natural powers, the name makes the armor feel like part of his identity.
8. Captain Marvel
You know a name's strong when both words carry such authority. While “Captain” suggests leadership and command, “Marvel” makes the identity feel extraordinary and heroic. Captain Marvel has been used by different characters over time, but it fits especially well when attached to cosmic-level abilities.
9. Wolverine
Aggressive right off the bat given that the animal it refers to is known for toughness and ferocity, Wolverine is a strong superhero name. It even fits Logan’s healing factor, claws, and attitude. It’s not as clean or noble as some other names, but that roughness is exactly what makes it work.
10. The Flash
The Flash is a name that sounds quick, sharp, and instantly recognizable, which is perfect for this character's abilities. For a speedster, it’s hard to imagine a cleaner or more effective title.
