Some Characters Just Have It
Video games have introduced thousands of memorable characters over the years, but only a select few manage to stay cool no matter how much time passes. Maybe it's their design, their attitude, their abilities, or simply the fact that they always seem to make an entrance. From fearless heroes to charming villains and complete wild cards, these 20 characters have earned the kind of reputation that doesn't disappear when a new console generation arrives.
1. Dante
Dante has spent the Devil May Cry series proving that fighting demons doesn't have to be gloomy. Between his red coat, ridiculous arsenal, and habit of cracking jokes while facing monsters several times his size, he's practically incapable of looking intimidated. Even when the action becomes completely absurd, Dante carries himself like he's having the best day of his life.
2. Solid Snake
Few characters can make crawling through an air vent seem as serious as Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid does. He's calm, capable, and experienced enough to deal with enormous military threats without needing to show off every five minutes. Add David Hayter's instantly recognizable voice and Snake's habit of surviving situations that should absolutely kill him, and his cool factor becomes difficult to challenge.
3. Lara Croft
Lara Croft from Tomb Raider became a gaming icon because she made dangerous expeditions look thrilling. She can climb ancient ruins, solve complicated puzzles, survive impossible falls, and still find time to outsmart whoever happens to be chasing her. While her personality and appearance have evolved over the years, that adventurous confidence has remained.

4. Master Chief
Halo's Master Chief doesn't need long speeches or flashy introductions to command attention. The green armor, reflective visor, and steady voice immediately tell you that you're dealing with someone who knows exactly what he's doing. When entire armies of aliens are standing in the way, it's usually enough to hand him a weapon and point him in the right direction.
5. Bayonetta
Bayonetta fights supernatural enemies while treating every battle like an opportunity to have fun. She's confident without being stiff, stylish without appearing overly concerned about anyone's opinion, and powerful enough to back up every bit of attitude she brings into a fight. There's no question whether she'll take control of the situation when she enters a room.

6. Kratos
Kratos from God of War has changed dramatically since his earliest appearances, but he's never stopped being intimidating. The older version of the character is quieter and more thoughtful, which somehow makes his enormous strength feel even more impressive when he finally decides to use it.
7. Leon S. Kennedy
Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil has the unusual ability to remain sarcastic while surrounded by some of the most horrifying creatures imaginable. Whether he's dealing with zombies in Raccoon City or rescuing the president's daughter from a strange cult, he rarely loses his composure for long. His questionable one-liners only make him more entertaining.
8. Samus Aran
Samus Aran from Metroid established herself as one of gaming's toughest bounty hunters long before elaborate character dialogue became standard. Her Power Suit gives her one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the medium, while the lonely atmosphere of the Metroid games makes her independence even more noticeable. She doesn't need a large supporting cast around her because she's perfectly comfortable exploring hostile alien worlds alone.
9. Geralt of Rivia
Geralt from The Witcher approaches monsters, political schemes, and awkward conversations with roughly the same exhausted expression. That dry personality works perfectly because underneath all the grumbling is someone who's remarkably skilled and often far more compassionate than he wants people to notice. His swords, white hair, gravelly voice, and tendency to reluctantly get involved in everyone else's problems have made him unforgettable.

10. Agent 47
Agent 47 from Hitman has turned a black suit, red tie, and completely expressionless face into one of gaming's most distinctive looks. His professionalism is funny precisely because Hitman regularly gives you the option to complete assignments using disguises, bizarre accidents, and increasingly ridiculous methods. Somehow, 47 can walk away from all of it without appearing even slightly embarrassed.
11. Cloud Strife
Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII made an enormous sword feel like perfectly reasonable everyday equipment. His reserved personality gives him a mysterious edge early in the game, while the story gradually reveals far more vulnerability and uncertainty underneath that detached exterior. Decades later, the combination of spiky blond hair, the Buster Sword, and complicated backstory still makes him immediately recognizable.
12. Arthur Morgan
Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't chase coolness, which is one reason he has so much of it. He's an experienced outlaw who can handle himself in a gunfight, but his quieter conversations and personal doubts reveal someone far more thoughtful than his reputation might suggest. By the time you've spent dozens of hours riding across the frontier with him, his worn hat and understated delivery feel every bit as iconic as his revolver.

13. Jill Valentine
Jill Valentine from Resident Evil has survived enough disasters to make most people avoid suspicious mansions and pharmaceutical companies forever. Instead, she keeps facing zombies, monsters, and increasingly unpleasant biological experiments with impressive determination. Her ability to stay focused when everything around her is crumbling is exactly why she has such staying power.
14. Ezio Auditore
Ezio Auditore enters Assassin's Creed II as a charming young troublemaker and eventually grows into one of the franchise's most respected assassins. You get to watch him mature across several games without losing the confidence and wit that made him enjoyable in the first place. His hooded robes, hidden blades, and effortless rooftop movement helped define what Assassin's Creed looked and felt like during its rise to popularity.

15. Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic was designed around attitude, and he's been running with that idea ever since. The bright blue spikes, red shoes, impatient animations, and constant confidence made him stand out immediately when he first appeared. His games have taken plenty of turns over the years, but Sonic himself still carries the same energetic personality that made players notice him in the first place.
16. Sephiroth
Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII has the kind of presence that can make a scene feel dangerous before he even does anything. His impossibly long sword, silver hair, black coat, and calm delivery give him a theatrical appearance that somehow never loses its menace. When those opening notes of "One-Winged Angel" start playing, you already know things are probably about to become considerably worse.
17. Doom Slayer
The Doom Slayer from DOOM isn't interested in lengthy negotiations with the forces of Hell. His entire personality is built around relentless forward momentum, and the modern DOOM games lean into that simplicity with spectacular confidence. You don't need pages of dialogue to understand him when his preferred response to a demonic invasion is already extremely clear.
18. Johnny Silverhand
Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk 2077 manages to be charismatic, irritating, funny, and self-destructive within the same conversation. His rock-star image and rebellious attitude give him immediate presence, but it's the cracks in that confidence that make him more interesting than a standard anti-establishment troublemaker. Even when you disagree with him, he's difficult to ignore.
19. Kazuma Kiryu
Kazuma Kiryu from Like a Dragon can dismantle an entire group of criminals in one moment and become completely invested in someone's ridiculous neighborhood problem the next. His seriousness makes the stranger side activities in the series even funnier because Kiryu rarely treats them as jokes. Beneath the intimidating suits and legendary fighting ability, he's also genuinely kind, which gives his toughness considerably more personality.

20. Link
Link has barely needed spoken dialogue to become one of the most recognizable heroes in video game history. Whether he's wearing the classic green tunic or exploring Hyrule in a newer outfit, there's something satisfying about watching him quietly prepare to face another enormous threat. Give him a sword, a shield, a few unusual tools, and a princess who needs help, and Link still looks perfectly at home at the center of an adventure.
