When Your Phone Starts Doing Everything For You
It's incredible seeing how far smartphones have advanced, especially when those Nokia bricks used to be the norm, but these advancements don't just come with perks. Sure, phones are remarkably convenient, but convenience can be a danger too. Because these days, people often treat their phones as if it's impossible to function without one. Don't believe us? Here are 20 things you're likely relying too much on your phone for.
1. Remembering Phone Numbers
There was a time, albeit decades ago, when people could easily recite the numbers of their closest friends and relatives without opening their phone. But today, people simply open their contacts app and scroll through until they find what they're looking for. Without it, you'd probably struggle to call anybody.
2. Getting Directions
Navigation apps have made getting lost much less common, which is a definite perk, but it's also made people far too reliant on their phone. Instead of paying attention to street names and watching where you're actually going, you repeatedly glance down to your phone for help. Imagine what would happen if your phone broke halfway!
3. Waking Up In The Morning
Instead of using a traditional alarm clock like the good ol' days, people now set up multiple alarms on their phone as a means for waking up on time. It's always a good idea to keep your phone plugged in overnight, unless you want to risk running out of battery and waking up way past when you should've gotten up.
4. Checking The Time
Watches and wall clocks haven't vanished completely, but instead of turning to them for the time, your first instinct might be to pull out your phone. Sometimes, you might even unlock the screen just to check the hour, and then get distracted by notifications!
5. Remembering Important Dates
Honestly, you should be remembering important birthdays, anniversaries, and other dates on your own, but we've become far too reliant on our phone calendars to make the effort. But just imagine, without these convenient reminders, how many important occasions would we forget without even knowing?
6. Doing Basic Math
Calculators are useful, but we rarely have them on hand when we need it. Having it on your phone definitely comes in handy that way, but because it's so accessible, people are turning to it even for the simplest of arthmetic. We're pretty sure that needing to do 14 + 49 on your phone is a little concerning.
7. Taking Photos Of Everything
It's nice having such a high-quality camera at your disposal when you want to capture a beautiful moment, but this level of accessibility has also increased everyone's desire to document everything. Do you really need photos of all your outfits, parking spots, signs, and random grocery shelves stored up in your gallery?
8. Remembering Your Shopping List
One convenient aspect of your phone is being able to note down your grocery list digitally instead of having to carry around a notebook or piece of paper. It is a little worrying though that without it, you might wander aimlessly inside the store, buying too much that you don't need.
9. Keeping Yourself Entertained
Our generation has become impossibly impatient, with even just a few minutes needing some sort of activity to prevent you from dying from boredom. And honestly, that probably has to do with how our phones carry endless amounts of entertainment with just the press of a button.
10. Settling Arguments
Now that everyone is able to carry 'receipts' of previous conversations right on their phone, it's changed the dynamics of arguing, whether it be within families, couples, or friends. Not to mention, debating whether you're right about something can quickly end with just a quick Google search on your phone.
11. Finding Restaurants
Gone are the days when you'd walk around town, see an interesting restaurant, and head in to give it a try. These days, finding restaurants are all about reviewing the ratings, looking at the menu, and observing photos. We rely far too much on what people tell us online when it comes to picking where to eat.

12. Staying In Touch With Friends
Phones make communication easier than ever, which has its perks, but can also make you lazy. When all of your interactions happen through texts, memes, and social media, it can make friendships feel a bit more distant and inauthentic.
13. Remembering Where You Parked
Huge parking lots used to require you to pay attention to signs, landmarks, or pretty much anything that looked memorable, but today, you can take a picture of the location or drop a pin on a map and stop thinking about it. Without that digital reminder, we're guessing you'd struggle quite a bit after becoming so reliant on it.
14. Checking The Weather
Looking outside isn't always enough, not when an app can immediately tell you the temperature, future forecast, humidity, windspeed, and more. In many ways, the weather app has become the first step when getting dressed! That's how important it is.
15. Managing Your Money
Nowadays, you don't always have to drive to a literal bank to check in on your expenses. Banking apps let you check balances, transfer money, deposit checks, and pay bills right from your phone! The convenience is nice, but it also means many people rarely keep track of their finances without opening an app.
16. Ordering Food
More and more people don't know how to cook these days, and that's largely in part to food delivery apps sweeping the nation. With just a few taps on your phone, you can order an entire meal to your house without even stepping out the front door. It's incredibly convenient, especially if you're in a pinch, but it's also made too many people reliant on them.
17. Remembering What You Need To Do
You know it's a bit much when you can't even remember your day's tasks without reaching to open your phone. Whether it's taking something out of the oven, buying toothpaste, or sending an email, everything is tied to the reminders on our phones these days, which can be a little unsettling to think about.
18. Looking Up Words
Coming across an unfamiliar word once meant having to use context clues or reaching for a literal dictionary. Today, you'll probably type it into Google to get immediate answers. Sure, quick definitions are convenient, but they can also reduce the amount of time you spend working out meanings for yourself.
19. Falling Asleep
Phones are with us 24/7, and we mean that quite literally. Because they're not just the first thing people usually see when they wake up, it's also the last thing they use before falling asleep. For many, it's become part of their nighttime routine to scroll, watch a video, or read an article on their phone.

20. Filling Every Quiet Moment
Perhaps the biggest dependency issue is that we use our phones even when we don't have a specific need. Sitting on a bus, eating lunch alone, waiting for an appointment, or taking a short break can immediately lead to reaching for the screen. Phone addiction is real people!
