20 Hogwarts Classes Ranked By How Useful They’d Be In Real Life

20 Hogwarts Classes Ranked By How Useful They’d Be In Real Life

Magic That Would Actually Pay Off

Hogwarts makes almost every class sound exciting, and in a world filled with talking hats and flying brooms, the whole universe seems cool enough to jump into. That is, of course, until you start asking which classes would actually help you. Rather than dive into the lore yourself, we’re here to break down the practical side of each class because not every lesson would be equally helpful.

1. Charms

Okay, let’s be honest. Charms would be the most useful Hogwarts class in real life. It focuses on making everyday objects do exactly what you need them to do, and what more could you ask for? You could use spells to retrieve lost keys, fix a cracked phone screen, or even shoot a quick Scourgify to clean a kitchen after dinner.

2. Potions

Look, we don’t make the rules—we just enforce them. And one rule of life is that learning how to make potions would be awesome. A properly brewed one could do all kinds of things, like help someone recover from a cold, calm you in stressful situations, or just help you get through the day. The downside is obvious, though, but that just means you need to study.

3. Herbology

People don’t give plant studies enough credit! The world is full of them, and learning about them is great. Knowing how to handle different herbs could make you useful in hospitals, greenhouses, research labs, and disaster recovery. Okay, it’s not flashy magic, but it would give you practical skills.

4. Defense Against the Dark Arts

You’re darn right we’d want to learn about this in the real world! If you can push past the terrifying teachers, Defense Against the Dark Arts teaches awareness, protection, and response under pressure. You might not need it every day, but when you do need it, nothing else would matter more.

5. Transfiguration

Transfiguration sounds absurdly useful at first, doesn’t it? Changing one object into another? That could solve countless problems! In reality, the catch is that the subject is highly technical, and a failed transformation could leave you with something unstable or worse than what you started with, but you know, just don’t mess it up.

6. Care of Magical Creatures

If magical wildlife existed openly in the real world, we’d spend all day in their presence. You’d get to hang out with Hippogriffs, Nifflers, Bowtruckles, and Thestrals, all without causing injuries or public panic. It’s a niche subject, but anyone working in animal rescue or veterinary care would benefit from it—even if it is a fictional universe.

7. Study of Ancient Runes

The study of ancient runes would be more useful than you think. Just like Latin in our world, old writing often controls access to old knowledge. If you could translate magical inscriptions on ruins, cursed objects, or family records, you’d be valuable to all kinds of high-brow employers. Hello, historians!

8. Arithmancy

Arithmancy treats magic like a system that can be studied and measured, which is exactly why we love it. If the subject helps calculate spell outcomes or forecast patterns, it would obviously be useful in research, finance, engineering, and risk assessment. It’s not the class you’d brag about, but it’s the knowledge that could make complicated work safer.

9. Muggle Studies

Hey, hey, hey. We know it sounds useless, but really think about it for a second! If you were a magic-caster, Muggle Studies helps you function in the regular world. Understanding money, phones, public transportation, hospitals, electricity, and basic workplace behavior—you’d be lost without a class like this.

10. Astronomy

Astronomy is a little different at Hogwarts than it is here, but that’s okay! It would still have real value; navigation, timekeeping, tides, and observation all connect to the sky. In a magical world, tracking planets and stars could also support spell timing, potion work, or ancient traditions.

11. Flying

Honestly, who among us wouldn’t like to fly? Exactly. Aside from looking cool, flying is also useful for transportation, search efforts, and simple fast movement. Not to mention, a skilled broomstick rider could also reach remote areas or help in emergencies. You’d just need to avoid bad weather.

12. Apparition

Apparition would be one of the most convenient skills imaginable—it allows near-instant travel! The only reason it ranks lower on the list is that splinching proves the technique is risky, and most people shouldn’t treat teleportation like a casual commute…even though they obviously would.

13. History of Magic

Much like Herbology, History of Magic is way more fun than people give it credit for. It’s no different than studying the lore on your own! Knowing about goblin rebellions, major magical laws, past wars, and old mistakes would help just about anyone.

14. Magical Theory

Magical Theory explains why magic works instead of only teaching students what to do with a wand. And the more you know about the nitty-gritty, the better off you’d be. That kind of foundation helps with spell invention, magical research, teaching, and troubleshooting when a spell fails in an unusual way.

15. Alchemy

If you can’t brew potions, alchemy is the next best thing! If you could study concepts tied to the Philosopher’s Stone or life-extending magic, you’d be entering one of the most powerful fields in the wizarding world. It’s only lower on the list because the subject is pretty advanced and far less accessible.

16. Divination

The thing with Divination is that it would be useful if it reliably gave clear warnings—but that’s a big if. Tea leaves, crystal balls, and dream interpretation could help someone prepare for danger, but it also leads to panic over vague signs that mean almost anything.

17. Ghoul Studies

Ghoul Studies doesn’t have the same place in Harry Potter lore, and maybe that’s for the best. Sure, it would have practical value for anyone dealing with haunted homes or strange disturbances, but outside that narrow line of work, the class wouldn’t help much with normal responsibilities.

18. Art

Art at Hogwarts is far different than what we have here…and that’s not always a good thing. Though it would be cool to see magical portraits and enchanted frames, this class is only useful for the right career. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be as broadly helpful as classes that solve daily problems.

19. Music

Music at Hogwarts could be way cooler if songs and instruments could be enchanted. You could imagine practical uses in entertainment or even magical alarms that respond to certain melodies. But that just doesn’t happen.

20. Xylomancy

Xylomancy is another one of those obscure classes that’s maybe best left hidden. Divining information from twigs sounds like one of the least reliable ways to make decisions. Okay, yes, you might enjoy learning it as a curiosity, but you shouldn’t base your real life on a bunch of sticks.
